This is a discussion thread titled "LED Cab Clearance Lights (CCLs) installed....", within the Tundra forum, part of the Truck Forums category.
I installed Recon's LED Amber Cab Clearance Lamps on my Tundra this past Tuesday-->Wednesday! After an exhaustive search on the web regarding what is currently available for Cab Clearance Lamps I decided on Recon's LED lamps. I selected the ones they offer for the Dodge truck in the amber style. This is their website: Recon Accessories: Ho
They arrived last Saturday and I set out to install them on Tuesday AM. Toyota's instructions for removal of the headliner involve gutting the interior and even removing the rear window. Well, I don't mind gutting the interior but I was not crazy about removal of the rear window. So after examination of the situation I decided the project was feasible if I just lowered the front part of the headliner. Pretty simple to do - just had to remove the upper center console, both visors and visor clips, both A pillar covers and the grab assist handle on the passenger side and grab assist plug on the driver's side. Then you just pull the front part of the headliner down from the weatherstripping at the top of the front doors. Between the hole in the center where the console was and by lowering the headliner a few inches you have enough room to get your hands in there to wire up your lamps.
EXTERIOR INSTALL: The hard part was figuring out to get up high enough to mount the center 3 lamps. I ended up throwing a blanket on the roof and climbing up on it from the bed. I am ~200 pounds and the roof did pop in and out but did support me while I was working and did return to its original form when I was done. The ridges up there help. I had done some research on the web and found out the CCL spacing on the Ford SuperDuty was 8" and 13" as below:
0---13"----0--8"--0--8"--0----13"---0
The measurements are to the center of each light. The lights are 6.5" from the front screw of each light to the leading edge of the roof (i.e., they follow the windswept nature of the roofline).
As always: measure twice and drill once. Each lamp requires 3 holes - 2 for mounting and a hole in the center for the wire.
I mounted the center light first. I taped a string to the center part of the windshield as indicated by the center of the rear view mirror mount and taped the terminal end of the string to the center of the CHMTL. This gave a good center line down the middle of the roof. I made my measurements, drilled the holes and mounted the center lamp. I used this lamp as base of operations for the other 2 on either side. The outboard lamps can be done using a stepladder beside the truck.
INTERIOR INSTALL: Simply a matter of connecting the wires. Some CCLs are self grounding - these Recons are not. Since I did not have a lot of room to work I decided to just connect the ground wires together like the power wires and lead them both down the A-pillar and ground the lamps down by the Left kick panel. I decided to control my CCLs by a separate switch mounted in the left knee panel next to my fog lamp switch. I am sure you can get a little more aggressive and tie them into the parking lights somewhere behind the dash if you wish. This is the switches I used for my fogs and CCLs (bought from an auto parts store here in town). I used this exact switch in my last truck to control my fogs and CCLs and really like the switch. I would have rather used something that looke OE but those are simply not available right now and I did not want to pay exorbitant prices for Toyota switches.
These lights are the same brand that apod installed on his truck except mine are amber versus his smoked.
Darn you ... yours is the second truck I have seen with this done and i really like it, your truck looks great !!! I've wanted to do this for a while now and your write up about how to remove the headliner is much appreciated . Guess I'll have to do mine now! Does anybody know where and which wire ( color ) is the power wire from the switch to the parking lights?
To remove switch plate (lower driver's side of dash):
There are 2 10mm bolts at the bottom of either side (you need to remove the sill plate and left kick panel first) and then there are 4 clips at the top of the panel (2 on either side of the steering wheel) which just pull straight out at you.
The fog lamps are Toyota fog lamps just purchased after the fact and wired independently for my control.
