TundraGeneral discussion forum for the 2007 and later Toyota Tundra.
This is a discussion thread titled "Crewmax Truck bounce-not just bed-whole truck", within the Tundra forum, part of the Truck Forums category.
I have Fabtech performance lift. Bed bounce is ever so slightly better, but mostly the same as my TRD suspension was. I think it has more to do with the increased sidewall height and wheel weight.

2008 Toyota Tundra Ltd DC 4x4
Options: TRD, Nav, XM Sat
Suspension: Fabtech 6" Performance Lift
Wheels/Tires: 35x12.50 BFG M/T KM2 on 18x9 Pro Comp 6088
Extras: AMP Research Steps
Future: Line-X, custom springs, Dynamat and audio upgrades.
The dcsb rode like a car, the crewmax rides like a truck.
They are both trd, limited, 4x4's.
IMHO. There is something up with the crewmax design. Put 250lb's on the tail end of the bed, rides just like the dc.
Aint no big deal to me though. I kinda like my truck to ride like a truck.
u may have something here. ive been a long time supporter of "theres nothing wrong with these trucks" thought because mine rides just fine.
BUT i did notice something today....i was on a two lane road right beside a white crewmax and mine was riding just fine but i looked over and actually saw the tail end of the bed wiggling back and forth like it was, well, bed bouncing, so u guys may have a legitimate complaint with a crewmax but certianly not a DC.
07DCwhiteSR5, Sorry you are wrong. As I stated in a earlier post, all three Gen. 2 Tundras I drove shook the teeth. All three were Non,TRD...4x4 SR5 DC. It's my belief that all DC and Crewmax models will shake if under the right conditions. Does not shake when pulling the boat. Thats what I use the Tundra for. So I can live with it. I wish Toyota would step up and fix this defect. That way this subject would go away.

To me it's not a defect it just depends on the road conditons and any truck would do it in the right road conditons.
Any truck would do it, but the Tundra does it more!
My lifted DC does it just as much as before the lift.

so may i ask a direct question what do you think is the overall Problem on the design? My opinion is the toe out shock design...
Erik
I don't know. If I were to make a guess, It has to do something with the frame. When you attach something solid to the frame, like a boat, the shaking does not happen. You can drive out of the shaking by going over 85mph. All three Tundras acted the same. This is my fourth Tundra. I hope it won't be my last. The fix must be expensive for Toyota not to fix these trucks. To bad.
PS. For eight months I too did'nt understand what the gossip was about. If the bounce ever happens to you......YOU will know it.
Again, all vehicles frames flex. The frequency at which it reaches the critical ( resonant frequency ) point here is what causes the "shaking". It feels totally out of control............. because it is !
Seems to me that the resonant frequency of a frame that size and that weight is probably around 5 to 8 Hz.
There are two ways to control it :
1. Re-inforce the frame so it doesn't bend as much
Adding a brace ( bolted on or welded ) would change the resonant frequency but there is very little space under the truck to locate such an addition.
2. Dampen the flexing so it does NOT reach the resonant frequency.
Most of the bending occurs somewhere behind the cabin, so let's concentrate there.
If you don't want to spend any money on the fix, try to vary your tires pressure. Add 4 psi to the rear tires and see if anything changes.
If you are pulling a trailer at times, try a Firestone RIDE RITE ( it's an Air Helper Spring that you add to the rear suspension and by controlling the air pressure, you adjust the height of the bed/trailer ). This tool will make the suspension response DIFFERENT and may very well cure the "bounce".
Other options are: Softer shocks, stiffer shocks, Add_A_Leaf springs, combination of the above ...... and there is always the old trick of throwing 2 or 3 bags of sand in the bed. At 100 lbs each they will surely dampen any vibration.
My Tundra is a 2006 so I never had the privilege of experiencing the famous "bounce" in a 2G Tundra. I have, however, seen it in a minivan and several older cars while riding on washboard roads.
Why don't you 2G guys try some of my suggestions above and let us all know if you see any difference ?

I agree the frame is the problem. Toyota should come up with a solution. Not me. I will be using the Tundra all week without the shaking. Why.... will be pulling a boat all week. Bottom line is....The shaking comes from Toyota. Toyota should come up with the solution.
I know some people have not experienced the bed bounce , but when you do you will know. Its not whining,,, it is not normal. I live in so cal and travel quite a bit. ( im a commercial pilot ) I drive and rent trucks all over the country and the world
I live in so cal and have owned a F150 also.
I believe it is a frequency related thing. i have driven on extremely rough roads and dont see any adverse handling with the Tundra, just on select sections of freeway ( 118 in particular ) . I drive a friends F150 on the same road and have no problem at all. The F150 rides like a cadilac.
That and mabey the mirrors are the only thing the F150 has on the Toyota. I have just learned to live with the bed bounce ( even though i have to drive over it every day im in town ) .
It is not normal however, and someone is going to make a frame stiffening kit or progressive shocks or something and make some cash on this.
Instead of people putting their 2 cents in debating whether this phenomonon is real or not,,, please just post if you have something positive to add regarding this problem. I had to read 5 pages of this ( much off topic ) before seeing no progress has been made

I have tried to explain what I knew about the bed bounce along with some suggestions ( read all my previous posts above ) and no one seems to react or do anything about it !
Toyota may or may not do anything about it, meanwhile you guys suffer through the problem, so why not try to fix it yourself ? try the cheap stuff first and go from there !
My truck, as I have mentioned before, is a 2006 and has no bed bounce issue. I am just trying to help you guys here.
Yet, if you don't want to help yourselves.....................

Reason: grammar

I have freinds with Tundra crewmax None of whom have this problem . In fact one of my friends has a lifted Tundra Crewmax limited with 37 inch tires and i've riden in this a few Times and Not any problem's to date. I do think the overall problem's might be in the shock's layout being toe out and the new frame Toyota tried to claim was best in class. However with that stated there are too many report's coming from member's to claim there isn't a problem. Some people might blow this way out of line but seriously I would try to handle it myself such as changing out the shock's add a sway bar from hellwig etc etc...We all know Toyota will take cheap short cut's why not add some better performance mod's to help solve the problem and please do post your finding's..
Erik
