TundraGeneral discussion forum for the 2007 and later Toyota Tundra.
This is a discussion thread titled "new clean-diesel V8 engine for tundra", within the Tundra forum, part of the Truck Forums category.
Is the new 4.5 liter engine from GM designed by Isuzu? Keep in mind guys, that Toyota bought part of Isuzu from GM. GM may not be using Isuzu diesel technology once the current Duramax is replaced, and this new one may not be Isuzu either.
For all we know, Isuzu may help out Toyota with the new 4.5, and make it more powerful.
Nope the new 4.5L Duramax is designed in house by GM. They have been able to learn a lot from Isuzu and now diesels are a core GM competency. So teh motor should be pretty good, the new emissions gear that everyone must put up with though.... I am not so sure about.
I will get a diesel next time around in a 1/2 ton, but I will wait for all the inevitable bugs to get worked out.
I know it will catch my attention when it arrives for sale here. My neighbor has a 6cyl Dodge diesel. If Toyota could do a six with the type of power Dodge has, now thats what I am talking about.

When it comes to the Tundra's new diesel, the 4.5L Aussie diesel is definitely the most speculated option.
However, based on some expert opinions we're privy too (read former Ford power train engineer), we've been told it's almost as complicated to re-design a foreign market diesel for U.S. emissions standards than it would be to build a new diesel from the ground up.
In the words of our source "...if it were that easy, the U.S. would be full of diesels right now. Ford, GM, VW, they all have fuel efficient diesels in Europe that would work in U.S. cars. The problem is U.S. emission standards are totally incompatible..."
In other words, don't be surprised if the Tundra's new diesel is something we've never seen before...
If they offer some kind of electric interior heater like the F250's I'll buy it. I just can't wait for the diesel motor to idle for an hr to get some heat. Plus at 400ftlb, I'd rather get the 5.7 gas. Bring it with 500ftlb and diesel it is.

My thoughts exactly, I'm coming out of an old 7.3L powerstroke that I loved. The particulate filters are killing the mileage on some of the '08 diesels. I couldn't justify buying another diesel, so I purchased an '08 Tundra.
While I am not in need of a diesel. I found this paragraph intersting...
..At the press conference, Toyota also unveiled a new hybrid pickup truck concept called A-BAT, which stands for the Advanced-Breakthrough Aerodynamic Truck..
Anyone have pictures of the concept?

In the GM Suburban with the 4.5, if the engine needs to come out, the body has to come off. The engine will not come out through the hood!!!! This is straight from a GM dealer that I deal with personally as a mechanic.

Absolutely, at least a year or two!

I was test driving a Tundra Sat. and the manager of the dealer said they just came back from a meeting and Toyota is now letting them say there will be a Tundra Diesel sometime in 2010 but it might be called a 2011 model. Also supposedly there will be a 1 ton in 2011.
Is this true who knows that's just what the guy said
