TundraGeneral discussion forum for the 2007 and later Toyota Tundra.
This is a discussion thread titled "new clean-diesel V8 engine for tundra", within the Tundra forum, part of the Truck Forums category.
Reuters.com printed a official press release this week end from Toyota jp saying the current tundra and sequoia in the US will be getting a clean diesel very soon . I would guess that the 09 trucks this fall or the following spring will get the 4.5L from the new land cruiser that is available now across the pond all ready . With 268 hp and 400 ft of torque . Which would work great for either truck it would be as fast as a 4.7L and tow as much as a 5.7 L .
I can't wait !!!!!!!!!!!

The 4.7 L land cruiser in the same test got 14.4 L per 100 km combined where as the diesel got 10.2 L per 100km or 23 US mpg combined .
If you compare it to the new sequoia with the 4.7 L tested in the US (since the land cruiser does not come with the 4.7 L ) . the numbers from fueleconomy.gov say the sequoia with the 4.7 L should be 15.7 L per 100 km or 15 US mpg combined.
So i would guess that the land cruiser with the diesel would get closer to 20 mpg combined if tested in the US .
Any way you cut it sound great to me !

I want fuel economy with good power for towing and hauling . Not to drag race and spuing black smoke every where . Thats why I did not buy a domestic 3/4 diesel the tiny gain in mpg did not match the added cost . and the tundra gas V8s where better so I bought a tundra instead .( mind you i did give up to much payload )
The idea it needs to have 550 ft lbs to compete is out there . 400+ would be great with 20 + mpg combined if you need to race your truck buy the 5.7 and every little go fast add on you can .

Has anyone mentioned that the new GM/Isuzu 4.5 Duramax V8 is rated at 310 HP and 510 FT LB torque. If they can get these ratings Toyota can do better!
What were you guys driving before the diesel power wars kicked off? There was a time when you couldn't even sniff three hundred horsepower in a truck, 1/2 ton or 1 ton and people still bought them like crazy and managed to tow their toys and do their work. And gas wasn't 4.00 a gallon then either. If you want a race truck, the aftermarket will gladly hook you up, most of us just need a truck that will do what we need it to do without breaking us on fuel costs.
Is the new 4.5 liter engine from GM designed by Isuzu? Keep in mind guys, that Toyota bought part of Isuzu from GM. GM may not be using Isuzu diesel technology once the current Duramax is replaced, and this new one may not be Isuzu either.
For all we know, Isuzu may help out Toyota with the new 4.5, and make it more powerful.
