My SR5 says "Remote Keyless Entry System". It says nothing about an alarm. I'd really like the alarm to go off if someone broke a window or opened a door.

I have read all through the forum just don't understand what exactly I need as far as hardware (GBS)? Do I just tell the dealer that is what I want? Can it even be done?

Thanks for your time.

If you want an alarm to sound when the glass breaks you need the GBS. When you install it, the system needs to be activated. In fact it needs to be activate on your SR5 regardless of the GBS for the alarm to work.

Thumbs up Re: Alarm activation confirmed!

I bought the truck into Sterling McCall this morning. A rep, Philip Nguyen, didn't believe me that the alarm was present/turned off in the 5.7L Tundra w/ keyless remote. As a matter of fact, none of the service rep (that I talked to on the phone believe there is an alarm in my truck). He loaded up my truck specs (bought it from there) to see if Alarm was one of the option bought...no of course. He tried to explained to me remote was for keyless entry only..blah blah...But he was very receptive and gave me the benefit of the doubt and had one of the tech hooked up the TechStream (nice piece of equipment may I add..can configure just about anything) and started poking around at it. It was a little chilly and I didn't want to bug in so I went inside the customer lounge for a cup of coffee. After like 20 mins, of which should take about 15 seconds if you know what you're doing, they're still at it. Arghhh...so I walked over and they told me "nope, your car doesn't have alarm..blah blah". I glanced at the screen and knew they were looking at the wrong menu (mind you, i even printed out the instruction and left it in the truck & told them about it). Anyways, I took over and click click click...bam, done. He armed...30 seconds later, open the door...wahhh wahhh wahhh...The exactly quote Phillip uttered was "urghh, i guess you were right." I thanked him for the service and went on my merry way. No charge of course.

Has anyone asked a San Diego County dealer to activate the alarm? Just curious as I don't want the hassle of what some of you described here.

There is a parallel thread with this topic thoroughly discussed here ---> DIY: OEM Security System Install

One of the posters there had this to say, which pretty much sums it up:
"Re: DIY: OEM Security System Install
Here is my experience. I hope it helps others in the same position I was in - confused!

OK. I have a CrewMax SR5 5.7L. It has engine immobilizer BUT NOT an alarm. If I sat in the cab and locked the doors, then waited a minute and opened the doors nothing would happen. If I held the panic button on my key fob for 10 seconds the horn would start to sound.
I added a Glass Break Sensor and Glass Break Sensor ECU. At this point the alarm would still not sound if I opened the door. The Glass Break Sensor also did nothing.
I took my truck to the dealer and asked they activate the Glass Break Sensor (You MUST take instructions on how to do this with you - most dealers have no idea you can do this!). I waited until my truck was having its first service, and they activated the sensor for free. I called two dealers in CA and both would activate for free during the service.
Now the Break Glass Sensor works, AND the alarm works if I lock the truck and open a door.

If your truck has an immobilizer then you can add the Glass Break Sensor (and ECU) and have your dealer activate the system. I THINK that even if you don't fit the Glass Break Sensor and ECU you could get the dealer to activate the alarm system - it would then only work if a door was opened. IMHO the glass break sensor is worth the $100 or so. It comes with alarm stickers to attach to your window and deter some thiefs.
I now have a factory specification alarm system - total cost $100."

On another note, I, too have an CM SR5 that I purchased the VIP3200 plus with GBS and microphone. I had the dealer activate at the first service which they did free of charge. Plug for Conicelli Toyota of Conshohocken.

Thanks!
I don't think you can turn off the seatbelt chimes for both front seats. The customization list includes an option to disable the passenger side seatbelt reminder chime.

I am going into my dealer later this week and while I'm there I would like to have some changes made using the Changeable Electronics menu, including activating my alarm. I would like to verify that this is done in the section labeled "Main Body", then changing the default for "Passive Mode" from "OFF" to "ON".

Ok, so my alarm was already activated after I purchased it, no problem there! But how do you know if you have glass break sensors? Where or what should I look for? Just curious. Thanks.

It looks like a tiny speaker or mic next to the AUX radio input and the heated seat controls. If you have a blank and not mic, you don't have the GBS.

Question Re: Alarm activation confirmed!

My dealer says parts are needed to get alarm going. I have a double cab sr5 with remote door unlock. Who is telling the truth or is this alarm being already in place like snipe hunting.

ok, if you have remote keyless entry AND engine immoblizer, you have the alarm on your truck, it is just turned off, look at the instructions for the glass break sensor and page 10 or so it tells you how to turn it on.

right here--->>> Sparks Toyota

look in the upper right hand corner for the instructions. you just ignore the part about turning on the GBS and just activate the alarm.

if they say its already turned on because if you hold the panic button down and the thing goes crazy then roll down the window, lock the doors with the remote, close the door, wait 1 minute, reach in through the window and open the door. if it goes crazy then it's tuned on, if it just opens and nothing happens then it's turned off.

but look at the GBS instructions and it will tell them how to do it.

Dropped my truck @ the "stealer"ship this morning to have the alarm activated. To my "surprise", I was told " the alarm system is there but there needs to be two parts purchased and installed @ a cost of $488."
Talk about a "reliable" dealership????
Any suggestions?

SUCCESS TO THE CONSUMER!!!! My "stealer"ship just called me back and said they "found and activated the alarm" on my truck. They also said it was so new that no one there knew about and because I talked to a Tech and he was INTERESTED, he read pages 10 -17, used the TechStream tool and activated my alarm -- @ NO COST TO ME!!!
