TundraGeneral discussion forum for the 2007 and later Toyota Tundra.
This is a discussion thread titled "Tundra interior vs Everyone else", within the Tundra forum, part of the Truck Forums category.
Let me start by saying Im a big Toyota fan and always have owned Toyota trucks/suvs...but Ive been checking out all the interiors of the full size trucks out there and it seems the Tundra is quite disappointing compared to what the 2009 Dodge Ram offers or even the GM twins. I took a look at the 2009 F-150 (pics at least) interior and dont care much for it but I was impressed by the Dodge. Not sure why Toyota decided to go with the deep individual guauges vs a nicer display cluster. I realize Im not the first to state the fact the interior isnt the best. The Tundra is a great truck but had they put a little more thought into the interior I wouldnt even look anywhwere else. (Still cant believe Im even considering a chrysler product now). Anyways thanks for letting me rant!
.
I have had many Toyotas and love (most of) their products and the company in general ... however ... they can and do make mistakes ...
I have a RC-LB in slate and I am NOT happy with a thinly painted plastic dash.
Many of the other interior parts like glove box cover are a softer plastic and the color goes all the way through the plastic .. NOT just thin paint on top.
When it get a small scratch ... it does not look bad like the dash does ... IMHO ..
You do have to realize that every new product does whatever is necessary to trump the old. Sure the 2009 Dodge Ram looks like the interior may beat the current Tundra but look at the older Ram's and I think you can safely say they can not compete with the 2007/2008 Tundra. The newest model always has the upper hand. Rams have had many issues in the past so the question is, is the 2009 Ram any more reliable than the previous models? A great interior only goes so far and the next truck built will be better than what they are offering.

Oh I totally understand that...I think the competition is good for the market...its nice to see everyone putting a decent effort in now, at least thats how I look at it.
I have to say that when the Tundra first came out, I thought the interior was down right ugly. It has grown on my alot though and while I still don't like the styling of it as much as my 07 GMC, I think it is much better built. I had the up-level, black leather interior with wood and brushed aluminum trim and the full center console and it was beautifull to look at, really reminded me of an Audi... as long as the truck wasn't moving or it was cold out. From day one it had about 5 different rattles and it just got worse and worse. The door pannels creaked and rubbed on the kick panel, the dash rattled in 4 places, the back doors creaked, the back seat rattled and the front pass seat would rock back and forth like it was loose when no one was in it. The dash even rattled from the vibration of the motor when it was cold. The Tundras' interior isn't quite as pretty to look at but I don't have any rattles in it yet and I'm more than happy to give up a little looks for less noise and higher quality feel. The new Dodge interior does look pretty nice but I'll hold judgement untill I see and feel it in person.

You bring up a very good point. Out of the 31 vehicles I've owned over the years (which includes everything from a '66 Dodge 3/4 ton x-army truck to a Lexus), this Tundra is the only one that has had a silent interior. My three Vettes were the worst as far as rattles, clicks, squeaks and groans, but ever vehicle I've owned has had their share....and it always drives me nuts. The Tundra interior (so far) has been a welcome relief. Have I had more attractive interiors...sure, but this one is far from ugly. And given my choice I'll take this one over any I've ever owned in a heart beat. It's comfortable, reasonably good looking, and it's QUIET!!! I'm happy.....
I've never felt that the interior of my truck is that great. The appearance of quality seems lacking even compared to my old 2004 DC. I have trouble seeing the radio info during the day in bright Arizona sun with my polarized glasses on. I do, however, like the way it looks lit up at night....I only wish they had lit up more switches on the door to make them easier to find at night....

Just like Ex-Chevy said, I had the same thing in my last 03 Silverado. Rattles everywhere to the point the service managers at the dealer were all on a first name basis. That truck spent more time in the dealers bay than it did at my house.
If you think we have a cheap dash, ask anyone who's owned a Chevy truck anywhere from 00-07 and have them tell you horror stories about a painted dash that peels if you look at it wrong. My interior was tan, and once that painted dash peeled back it wouldnt stop and I had giant areas of black plastic exposed on an otherwise tan dash. Once the paint bubbled, it was all over.
I have 13k miles on mine and so far I dont have any scratches on the dash, although I dont throw books up there or paper work, I just wipe it clean a few times a week and its been perfect.
That new dodge interior is pretty nice, but very busy.....but my current one turns me on! Too much info???

There is no doubt that overall The Tundra is a better built Truck than the Big 3's offerings.
I'm sure it's going to be a more reliable truck in the long run without a doubt.
And you are basing these assumptions on what? Certainly not it's track record to date. I wouldn't say "without a doubt", seems there are plenty of reasons to "doubt" it's build quality and reliability so far.
Not meaning to bash here, but those are pretty arrogant statements.
On the flipside, if a domestic fan made those same statements, I would call him out on them just the same.
I guess I am way old or out of touch but this Tundra is very very nice in my opinion. I don't trade or buy new trucks very often and am very excited about owning this truck. My last truck was a 98 1/2 ton leather x cab Chevy, very nice but rattled and shook like a dog and the peach seed thing. The 90 Chevy x cab before that was a very good truck that never gave me problems. I hope this Tundra will do as well as the 90 Chevy did.
I am a Toyota fan but i have to say, the mistakes made with the Tundra are really embarrassing for the company (Tailgate, bouncy bed, etc). I also think the new interior for the 09 RAM and F-150 are much better looking than what is in the current Tundra. However, history tells me Toyota will be persistent and will fix these issues ASAP. I still have faith.
