Default Catalytic Converter Thefts

Watched the news and amazingly found out that people out there stealing catalytic converter because of a mere $100 but costs up to $1,000 to replace it. Toyota is the highest stolen ratio vehicle because those converters are bolted on, not welded. Even if they are welded, crooks can just saw them off in 5 minutes and walk away.
Anyone heard of anything like this happen around you?

There are rare and expensive metals inside catalysts. It has been happening for a little while now.

Yeah, the tweakers have been hitting the smaller used car lots in the area and taking them off every truck they can get under.

I actually just heard about that happening of here in Los Angeles in the South Bay area specifically in the El Segundo area. A lot of cats were getting stolen. I read in the paper a cop pulled over a car with no plates one night and found 5 cats in the back seat...one of them was still warm!!! If I see anyone under my truck messing with it or trying to F it up....Im comming outside with my Remington 870!!

Next time I am at my buddies shop, I might put a couple of spot welds on the bolts that hold the cat in place.

They hit a muffler shop in Raleigh, took over twenty off of cars on the lot. Crazy, another reason to put your truck in the garage.

I think it is the palladium they are after. $362 an ounce. I don't know the palladium weight in a cat but it must be worth the effort of removing the cat and harvesting the metal.

I was at the Toyota dealership and a guy was ahead of me in the service line, and his Tacoma sounded like a Harley. I asked the service guy what happened to his truck, and he said someone stole his Catalytic Converter. That's enough for me to throw a few welds on my whole exhaust system. It would suck if they stole my Converter but even more if they took off with my TRD exhaust. It might not keep them from stealing it if they really want it, but they may just move onto another car or truck.

That sounds like a smart move. I'll be having an exhaust shop installing a custom exhaust with my Magnaflow muffler this weekend. I plan to ask them to spot weld a bit at the cats to provide a little bit of a deterrent (obviously not much can be done to make them steal-proof).
