This is a discussion thread titled "100km/h - 60mph limit on switching in/out of 4X4", within the Tundra forum, part of the Truck Forums category.
Hi everybody. This is my first post. New 07 dbl cab 2k km's. Great truck!!!
However, I am having issues with not being able to switch in or out of 4X4 while over 100km/h. Up here in northern BC this is an issue as winter is 6 months long with lots of snow and I like to pass in 4X4 on the highway but no need to run down the highway in 4X4 full time.
My dealer advised that's the way it is with no suggestions.
Does anybody know of how to get around this? A programmer?
Re: 100km/h - 60mph limit on switching in/out of 4X4
It is like that so you don't shatter your gears. I suggest you slow down when the conditions warrant 4wd. No need to blow past people like that and put people in danger. SLOW DOWN.
Re: 100km/h - 60mph limit on switching in/out of 4X4
I also live in snowy conditions. If I need 4wd to be on, I switch on when I leave home/work and leave it on. The 4wd system is not a full time system so it only engages when slip is sensed. There is really nothing to be gained by flipping back and forth. The reason Toyota does not permit you to put it in and out of 4wd above 100 km/h is to protect your differential
Re: 100km/h - 60mph limit on switching in/out of 4X4
I agree with some of the posters above -- slow down. I usually put my truck in 4wd only when I pass someone in those conditions. It can be a b*tch to do so, but it is possible after putting it into 4WD below 100km/h in those adverse conditions.
I have done it a couple of times between Kelowna and Merritt in December. Truck handled it beautifully once I put it in 4WD.

This isn't true. It's a full time system and not meant to be driving on constantly in 4WD - especially on non-slippery surfaces. There is no "auto" anything about the 4WD on the Tundra.
I'm confused by why you guys are passing in 4WD. If you need 4WD for the conditions, then you really shouldn't be passing. If the conditions don't warrant use of 4WD, then you shouldn't need it to pass. wtf?
Re: 100km/h - 60mph limit on switching in/out of 4X4
Agreed. If conditions call for 4WD, I'm usually slowing down to under 40km/h. Engaging 4hi at anything over that speed seems ridiculous to me. Fastest I've ever gone in 4WD was 70km/h, and I was asking for it at that speed. Going 100k in 4WD and thinking its going to help you is BEGGING for it.

If the gears line up @ 97km/h they should line up @ 120km/h. If they don't, there are issues with the way things are put together.
My 03 GM 2500 didn't have any limitations as to speed and neither have any of my Fords.
And I'll bet these weren't 4wd on-the-fly (push a button) transfer cases. Ford, Dodge and Jeep say you can shift in/out of 4HI at speeds UP TO 55 mph. Nissan says UP TO 60.5 mph. I'm sure your 03 2500 had a manual transfer case and yes...you can jam them into 4wd and any speed. Apples and oranges.

The Ford, GM and Dodge don't limit you to what speeds they engage in(regardless of what the manual says). I have owned all three with push button 4X4.
Don't get me wrong though, I wouldn't trade my new Toyota for any one of those trucks, this is just an issue for me as I do a lot of highway driving in the winter and I am min of 100Km between centers.
PS. I WASN'T ASKING FOR A DRIVING LESSON - I WAS ASKING FOR A FIX OR WAY AROUND THE SPEED LIMITER ON MY 4X4 SYSTEM OPERATION.
Re: 100km/h - 60mph limit on switching in/out of 4X4
I believe the owners manual states "not" to engage the 4WD above 62 MPH. I have not seen anything that states not to drive faster than 62 MPH after engaging 4WD.
