Default Backup camera manually on/off?

Any idea how to manually turn on the camera while moving forward, in order to keep an eye on the trailer? Does selecting reverse send a 12 volt current to the display? If so, I could put a small rocker switch in front of the monitor which supplies power to it. Maybe hide a switch in the forward most sunglass holder.
These are the questions that keep me up nights.

You could just look up 10" into the rearview mirror.

I am pretty sure it does get the power from the reverse lights, which means that your switch will have to shut off the feed from the reverse lights while turning on your alternate source, otherwise your reverse lights will come on whenever the switch is turned on. I don't have the camera myself but I was planning on doing something similar. The other question is whether both the camera and the monitor turn off and on, or just the monitor.

Just a few thoughts there, good luck with it.
