OH MY GOSH!!! YEAH! I finally fixed it. For real this time. Yes, guys I did take it to the dealer for help and they were blaming the intake and wouldn't look at it seriously to troubeshoot it. So here's the solution, short version...
Volant Intake was the problem.. ...Even though I currently have Airaid installed...
Here's the scoop...
I originally installed the Volant Intake right after I got the truck. I had it on for a week or so and decided I didn't like it because for reasons of my own and ordered the Airaid intake. Airaid install went well and very happy with overall quality, fit, finish etc. As said before, but I'll restate here, I drove the truck 10 miles after install and Bam..Trio of three lights came on, TC, VSC, and CEL. I installed the Airaid at the same time as the remote starter and I was thinking originally that possibly the installer didn't get the TC switching hooked back up. In the midst of all of this, I had an appointment to take the truck to get the wiring for nitrous installed, Zoomers, and DT Headers..So they installed the Headers and Zoomers, and got it back like two weeks later. Light still on. I thought the issue was from intake because I personally installed that BEFORE the Zoomers and DT Headers and the light was already on...So that's the background. You can see from other posts of what I tried to no avail. Tonight I went out to garage to take off Airaid and put the stock back on and trouble shoot from there, thinking maybe I needed a new MAF meter. It's more complicated for me to take off the Airaid because all the Nitrous fittings, etc are hooked up to the Airaid so I didn't really want to do that. But before I started taking everything off, I went up to my attic and got some fuel hose to try what Underground Racing suggested to put the fuel hose up to my ear and hear for vacuum leaks. Well, remember that it's winter here in IN and the past two weeks it's been extremely cold. With that said, I have never before looked a vacuum leak with engine running as it was too cold to do it outside, so I would pull the truck in the garage and check, etc. So tonight I cracked the garage and started the truck up and popped the hood. I didn't even need the fuel hose as I could immediately here the rushing sound of a large vacuum leak. Started feeling and looking around and I quickly found the problem.
When I installed the Volant intake, Volant makes you raise up the engine beauty cover in order for it to clear with the intake pipe, so you remove the front beauty cover grommet mount and thread in a spacer from Volant. Well, when I removed the Volant, I removed the spacer and screw, but didn't replace the original grommet screw because I have lost it. I didn't think anything about it because I simply thought it was just an external mount; however, that mount is also a plug into the truck's (manifold?) intake. So with that volant screw out and the trucks oem screw out air was rushing out of that hole. I put my finger on it and instantly the truck began to idle and quited right down. I found the Volant screw and screwed that back in until I can call the dealership on Monday to order a OEM grommet screw. Reset the light, reinstalled the Airaid TBS and went for about a 50 mile drive tonight. It's beautiful...The truck idles nicely, doesn't surge, and has considerbly more power. Very happy. Thanks for your suggestions and comments during this frustrating time for me.
Yes, NOS is next. I don't want to spray until temps come up a bit. Schedule wise still a few weeks ago from getting the custom install finished. I am having two 10" Alpine Type X subs installed behind center console. One will be angled towards passenger, other towards driver side. They will be set far enough apart that the nitrous bottle with cradle in between them facing forward. Should be pretty sweet when finished, but it will be February until finished with it.
thats why the dealer have every reason the decline warranty repair when the truck has been modified. as a tech i hate to diagnosis a drivablity problem with all the aftermarket accessory installed. if you come in for a warranty repair and found out that the aftermarket accessory is causing the problem, you will be charged to repair the problem.
The dealer has a right to charge for a repair needed because of a modification, but does not have the right to refuse or decline warranty work if the problem can not be attributed to the modification. It might be a pain for you, but the law is the Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act. In this case it was an error by the owner that caused the problem and the dealer would be justified in charging labor to diagnose the problem.
There are two sides to this, for the times some knucklehead (not referring to Cycleman) has tried to get warranty work done on something they modified with crappy parts and workmanship there are cases of dealers refusing warranty coverage because a part totally unrelated to the problem is on the car. My buddy had a Dinan exhaust on his BMW and when the transmission went bad the dealer tried to deny coverage because of the "drive train" modification. An explanation of the warranty act and providing them copies of case law changed their tune.
Here is the SEMA web page that discusses warranties and aftermarket parts. Its reads in part, "The warranty coverage can be denied only if the aftermarket part caused the malfunction or damage for which warranty coverage is sought. Disputes in this area usually boil down to arguments over facts and technical opinions, rather than arguments over interpretations of the law."
Here is the Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act link. In part it reads, "The law means that the use of an aftermarket part alone is not cause for denying the warranty. However, the law's protection does not extend to aftermarket parts in situations where such parts actually caused the damage being claimed under the warranty."
Yes, the dealer has a part; however, if a customer is requesting a diagnosis and help with something I think the dealer has a responsibility to meet's it's customers needs. I have three toyotas currently and have purchased about a dozen cars from the dealer. I love my dealer and I was requesting their assitance. I was willing and still in the future would be willing for their services if something wouldn't be covered under warranty because of modifications I've done. I personally choose to personalize my truck with full knowledge that it's possible that it may affect my warranty on certain issues.
we get customer that had modify their truck and the modification is causing the problem and they raise hell because we refuse to fix the problem because they refuse to pay. thats right that the dealer can not refuse a warranty repair but if the modifaction is not related to the problem. i'm just say that people think that thier factory warranty covers their aftermarket modification.
