Yikes - Strange sound from engine

Almost 3k on my DC 4x4 limitednow. Took it out for some WOT fooling around this afternoon and on my trip home picked up a strange whinning sound coming from the engine. Almost sounds like amp whine. Put it in 2wd same sound. Took it for a drive tonight, its gone. Any thoughts?
