For the last couple days I've been mulling over an insurance question with respect to a Snugtop Supersport Canopy I just purchased for my 2007 Tundra. I've never purchased one of these canopies before; and, being that it is costing me $2,500 with all accessories (rack, fold-down slider, clothes hanger), I was wondering how this might be covered in the event of an accident.
I haven't contacted my insurance company (USAA) or anything, but would I have to pay more to have this covered as well? It would be a shame to drive off the lot, have an accident, and be out $2,500. After the install I'm driving nearly 3,000 miles to Pensacola, Florida and would hate to have something like that happen.
Any insight ya'll might be able to lend would be much appreciated!
just like when you add expensive stereo equipment or 24inch rims. if your car gets stolen or totaled they will pay the replacement cost but not for the add ons, unless they are covered/listed on the policy.
best thing would be to call them and see if they would insure the add ons.
You need to call USAA and have them make note that you spoke with them about the add on. If it is attached to the vehicle at the time of the incident then the coverage would transfer to the canopy, however, if that ever happens it will ultimately come down to the interpretation of the way it was attached and what the policy states with regard to attached equipment.
This is why it becomes important for you to speak with someone in policy service at USAA. 1-800-531-8111 and let them know about this expensive add on.
I did this for my last tundra that had lots of aftermarket equipment on it. USAA doesn't add anything to the policy, it doesn't cost more they don't have you list it, but you better be able to document it at the time of the loss. Also they notate every call you make to them so when you call they will note it in your file and if it ever comes up in a claim you can say, on date xyz I called and spoke with policy service and they said blah blah blah.
That was quick! I guess I will give them a call either tomorrow (if they are open) or Tuesday to talk to them about it. Good idea about having them note it as well as noting it myself (have to create a new insurance file on the trusty laptop).
I'm glad to hear they don't charge any extra for it. At the moment, they are charging me as much as I want to pay for insurance!!
I'll get some photos up as quick as I get the thing installed. It actually came in last week but I'm not having them install until this Thursday as I have to go pick up a U-haul trailer as well.
Thanks very much, all, for the quick and informative responses. This forum really is great!
