TundraGeneral discussion forum for the 2007 and later Toyota Tundra.
This is a discussion thread titled "Engine Knocking", within the Tundra forum, part of the Truck Forums category.
I have been looking for some one that has engine knocking around 1000-1800 rpms. Its not cold start knocking but when i go uphill or cruising areas with lots of hills its very noticeable . I looked on the forums and did a search as well just got cold start knocks and older tundra knocking. I hate that noise and just want to find a way to solve the problem. If you have the same problem or know the link please help its getting really annoying.

Use good quality gasoline, preferable the Top 10 tier as recommended by the manual. Or try using higher octane gasoline. From 87 go to 89.
You need to report it to your dealer....it's not normal for the 5.7 to knock under load. I can tow almost 6000lbs in the mountains using 87 octane and my engine is pretty quiet...never have heard any knocking, even when cold.

I Dont Know If Mine Knocks Or Not Because I Go To The Dollar Store And Buy There Octain Booster And Add To Each Tank--I Think I Get Better Millage Because Of This---Drove 275 Miles Fri. To Check The The Millage (60) Miles A Hr. I Filled It Up Till I Could See The Gas Sitting At The Neck (I Feel This Is The ONLY Way To Check Millage) I Got 20.1mpg---I Have 1000 Miles On The 5.7--Flo Master--KN Drop In Air Filter--I Will Be Going To Mobile 1 At 5000 M.
dealer said sry cant do anything about it... I wanted to snap and go rampage on them but i just walked away.
I'd be on the phone with Toyota customer support in a heartbeat complaining about your dealer. There's no reason for a modern engine to have pre ignition knock. The computer constantly makes ajustments to keep this from happening.
Thats me I will stop doing that if I can remember to do so---I dont know when I Started doing that---Sorry if it bugs everybody as I Did not think it was the same thing as all caps--dw
