Engineering an Ad...Spotlight on Tundras Advertising
Hi Everyone,
Someone at work here gave me a copy of Machine Design and it had a really good article on how they did all the Tundra TV Ads. It says that they are all 100% real and there was no doctoring of any video footage. If you do not have access to the magazine, here is the link to it online: Engineering an ad

Hey, for the record, all of the Ford commercials are true too. Does that mean an F150 can stop a plane in the amount of time the commercial airs? No.
Also, the one where the Tundra pulls "10,000" lbs up that ramp.. well, it doesn't. It is actually pulling a 4K some odd lb trailer to EQUAL 10,000 lbs with the weight of the truck.
Re: Engineering an Ad...Spotlight on Tundras Advertising
I like the ads, what kills me is the "Do not try this at home" disclaimer on the bottom of the screen. Who could ever imagine someone trying those stunts at home?

An old beer can makes the best shim stock in the world. New ones work pretty good once they're empty.

The seesaw load was 10,000 lbs, plus the weight of the truck for about 15-16,000 lbs total. This is the only one with the truck going "up" something.
The "ramp" - which is the one with the closing doors (truck doesn't go "up"), just drives down the ramp/road... the trailer weight isn't specified in this article.
The pulley commercial had a 6,400 lbs container hooked to regular pulleys, so the Tundra was pulling with no mechanical advantage.
The wrecking hammer commercial really had 10,300 lbs of trailer, in addition to the weight of the truck, for a total weight of 15-16,000 lbs.
They claim to have several people signing affidavits to prove this.

Ah-ha this must have been what I was seeing everywhere.

There’s been some carping about this ad and the seesaw spot by folks on the Internet saying the truck really wasn’t towing 10,000 lb, and that the ads deliberately mislead by including the 6,000-lb weight of the truck in the overall 10,000-lb figure. But Funke and McCloskey are adamant; the trailers carried 10,000 lb or more, so the truck’s engine is really moving over 16,000 lb. (And they have the affidavits to back them up.)

I'm building my pendulum as we speak. Except mine will have a sharpened point on the end.

If I recall correctly, 3 people were called on to sign the affadvits. One being an attorney, the next being a production chief, and finally an engineer (if memory serves me).
