TundraGeneral discussion forum for the 2007 and later Toyota Tundra.
This is a discussion thread titled "20 inch wheels vs 18 inch wheels", within the Tundra forum, part of the Truck Forums category.
I am thinking of swapping my 20 inch wheels for 18 inchers, i would a little more tire and save a little money at replacement time. The 08 came with the 20,s i would rather have 17 or 18 s. I am old school, give me pros & cons of both. I have (sometimers) an crs at times. Help me make up my mind.
I've been contemplating the same thing! The tires that came with my 20" rims are too low-profile for my taste, and it sounds like I'll need a lift to get bigger tires around the 20" rims.
I believe most will agree 18's will have a relatively softer ride and better off-road performance than 20's.

Rear Susp: ProComp ES3000 #326510 (2.25" taller than stock), 1.25" blocks plus PRG mini-pack (http://www.tundrasolutions.com/forum...and-new-truck/) gives 2.25" total lift, parking brake cable bracket spacers, wheel well height 43."
Front diff and rear ds drop; trailer hitch electrical harness tucked up above bumper.
After 20K miles swapped 305/65/18 BFG AT for 285/75/18 Toyo AT, still on stock 18x8x60 offset TRD wheels, about 1/8" clearance to sway bar. Like the extra height but miss the width. Next time either 305/70/18 or 35x12.50/18.
Added 5th 285/75/18 Toyo AT as spare. Foam pad above spare to help with bed bounce.
Bed Bounce: Stiffer E-tires are worse than stock P-metric; biggest improvement from PRG mini-pack, slight improvement from shocks and foam pad above spare. Still a stiff ride but tolerable now.
Best things about this truck: 5.7 and transmission, interior size and comfort, very quiet at high speed.
Worst things about this truck: bed bounce, no VSC in 4wd, mileage sucks above 70.

20's weigh more, get worse mileage, ride poorer....but look better.
Bling and Kaching versus Boring.

I'd go with 18s if I had a 33" tire. If I had 20s, I'd have to go at least with a 35" tire. 18s on 35" tire would seem like TOO much tire...unless anyone has a pic to prove me wrong.
I had the 275/55/20 on my DC Limited and now have the 275/65/18 on my Crewmax. I like the feel and handling of the 18 better. Obviously the 18 is going to be better for off roading due to more sidewall when airing down.
The wheelbase on the DC is identical to the Crewmax but the truck seems to corner alot easier with the 275/65/18. Maybe its just my imagination. But since I have had both I would opt for an 18 in the future.

For those of you who will be using your Tundra for off road use if you're going with a 20 inch rim you should be running at least a 40 inch tire. 18's and you're looking at 36's or bigger.
Basically the rule of thumb is 2 x the rim size and that's the diameter of your tire. Why? To allow enough tire flex between the rim and the object you are driving over and to allow enough rubber when airing down in deep snow or rock climbing. Also having a more rubber between the rim and road provides a quiter ride.
So bigger sometimes is really worse depending what you want to do with your truck.
Pick up a 4Wheeler magazine, they have written numerous articles discussing this very topic.
I myself witnessed a dope in a Chevy Pickup 2500 4x4 blow out all four 34 inch mud tires running 22 inch wheels on a trail up to Elk Camp which is pretty nasty and filled with huge ruts and rocks.

Stock TRD wheels look the best. Part of the reason why I went with the TRD package.
I didn't want the TRD suspension, but I did like the TRD 18" wheels. My black '08 4x4 DC came with the stock steel rims. I bought a set of the TRD's off ebay (w/ tires; 64 miles on them), added TPMS from ebay, and had them balanced and mounted yesterday. WOW- what a difference over the look of the truck with the stock steel rims!
Mine came with the 18 inch alloys. Received my TRD 18s I bought off ebay today and will be going on tomorrow. Had thought abot looking for some 20s, but personally I like the looks of the TRD 18s better. Plus, I wanted to keep my Michellins. Not a Bridgestone fan.
im running a 20" kmc with 275 65 20 with a 3 inch daystar ploymer block and toytec 1.5" rear block. tires about 34". look perfect with suspension setup i have.
My truck came with the 20s. I've seen a lot with the 18s, since that's the standard. I think the 18s are a little small for such a big beefy truck. The 20 inch wheels on my friend's 2008 F350 look small on that truck, but on my truck, 20 inch wheels look like they fit. The 22s are nice too, I just don't have the money to sink into them.
