TundraGeneral discussion forum for the 2007 and later Toyota Tundra.
This is a discussion thread titled "Okay to paint chrome bumper?", within the Tundra forum, part of the Truck Forums category.
My Tundra is going into the body shop in a couple of weeks to get the passenger side bed side replaced due to an incident with a post.
Anyway, I'm thinking of blacking out my truck entirely and getting all the chrome painted black. I have a chrome grill surround and back bumper. The front bumper is already black. Plus, these chrome bumpers seem to be a little rust prone from what I've seen.
The body shop owner said they will paint it for me since they will have the bumper off the truck anyways. I asked how much and he said "oh, a case of beer will be fine". That's cool with me. He said they would sand it all down and paint it black. He did mention of course that I would have to worry about stone chips if its painted but I think I can live with that.
Has anyone else here done this? If so, how did it turn out?
It sounds like painting the bumpers can be successful if you go to the right shop.
I had nerf bars sprayed with the Rhino Liner, when they did the bed, on a Ford truck that I had. I thought that by covering the nerf bars with that stuff they would never rust. Three years later I was throwing them away due to rust. Somehow, water gets underneath the liner material and gets trapped. Rust comes pretty quickly afterward. I would say you're asking for trouble when you spray your bumbers with LineX. Ask the LineX guys if they guarantee that your bumper won't rust out if you have them do it. I guarantee you will get no guarantee.
Water will not penetrate LINE-X, it provides a permanent water tight seal.
There could be many reasons why what happened, happened. The surface may have not been properly prepared. You may have already had a lot of rust and it was not visible on the surface yet.
No one, not even the body shop, is going to guarantee no rust unless its stainless steel. Giving a guarantee that carbon steel will never rust is like giving a guarantee that it will never rain. Even if you coat carbon steel, moisture within the steel can rise to the surface in 2 or 3 years.
We've applied LINE-X not only to bumpers, grill guards, and other auto related steel items, but we've also applied it to the inside of water tanks of fire brush trucks. The LINE-X bedliner product is also certified for potable water use.
Getting ready to apply LINE-X to portions of the exterior and inside the water tanks.
Typical rock chips on a grill guard with rust formation.
If the surface is properly prepared, LINE-X is a excellent alternative to powdercoating.
It sounds like Line-X is a superior product to Rhino Liner. In my case with my sprayed on nerf bars, which were painted black, those nerf bars were brand new when they were sprayed with Rhino Liner. Later, the coating at the bottom of the nerf bars came off in large flakes, along with rusted steel. I would have thought water couldn't get to the steel surface. I imagine they weren't prepped right. In any case, that was $400 nerf bars, and $100 to coat them with Rhino Liner down the drain. I went back to the Rhino people and they said it wasn't their problem. So I learned my lesson.
We've been in business for four years. We've made a few mistakes, but I can honestly tell you that we have yet to have a customer return to us with a problem like what you experienced.
I painted My rear bumper to match my truck, going to paint the front in the spring. etching primer and sanding, as been stated earlier. Done once repaint is easier if ever neaded.
Mine are painted, and have been for about 8 months now. Don't even have any rock chips yet *knock on wood*
They can be painted as long as the prep is done well. It requires tons of sanding and heavy use of etching primer
Hi Third,
I didn't realize you painted the chrome on your truck. I seriously think you have the best looking black Tundra I have ever seen! I really like the blacked out look.
I think I'll go ahead and get the chrome painted at the body shop. This place does really good work so I'm sure it will turn out fine. Can't wait to see what it looks like, and to get rid of my crumpled bed side after side-swiping a post. Doh!
You could always order the color-matched grill, that way you only have to have the rear bumper painted...sell the chrome one to a poor guy with a "plain jane" Tundra
