TundraGeneral discussion forum for the 2007 and later Toyota Tundra.
This is a discussion thread titled "Power outlet always-on mod?", within the Tundra forum, part of the Truck Forums category.
Trying to clarify something here...and yes, I've done a search. It seems everyone wanted to mod their additional power outlets so that they're always on. I wanted to do the opposite because I usually leave the PDA charger plugged in even when not charging, and I didn't want to discharge the truck battery. I've read in some older threads, though, that the "always-on" outlets shut off after 2 hours of engine stop, so it may not be as critical as I thought. Is this true for Gen 2 Tundras or only the Gen 1's?
A$$uming that the always-on outlets are in fact "always on" is there a way to mod them so that they are like the cig lighter and they'll only supply power when the key is in the ignition?
Moreover, am I making much ado about nothing? I know a cell phone/PDA charger will still draw a small amount of current even when not connected to the device it is supposed to be charging, but is it enough to drain a battery over time?
TIA,
~A

07 DC, all 3 shut off after 2 hours.

Rear Susp: ProComp ES3000 #326510 (2.25" taller than stock), 1.25" blocks plus PRG mini-pack (http://www.tundrasolutions.com/forum...and-new-truck/) gives 2.25" total lift, parking brake cable bracket spacers, wheel well height 43."
Front diff and rear ds drop; trailer hitch electrical harness tucked up above bumper.
After 20K miles swapped 305/65/18 BFG AT for 285/75/18 Toyo AT, still on stock 18x8x60 offset TRD wheels, about 1/8" clearance to sway bar. Like the extra height but miss the width. Next time either 305/70/18 or 35x12.50/18.
Added 5th 285/75/18 Toyo AT as spare. Foam pad above spare to help with bed bounce.
Bed Bounce: Stiffer E-tires are worse than stock P-metric; biggest improvement from PRG mini-pack, slight improvement from shocks and foam pad above spare. Still a stiff ride but tolerable now.
Best things about this truck: 5.7 and transmission, interior size and comfort, very quiet at high speed.
Worst things about this truck: bed bounce, no VSC in 4wd, mileage sucks above 70.
I wasn't aware about the 3 hour switch off, good to know though. I do know that my lighter plug switches off as soon as the vehicle is turned off, but I thought the AUX (to the right of the lighter) stayed on.
Gotta give it a try.

They all shut off after 2 hours but there is another problem for my use.
I have a portable Lowrance GPS unit that I plug into the accessory next to the cigar lighter. When I stop somewhere for a few minutes and shut off the truck the power is still on for my GPS unit BUT when I restart the truck I lose power for a second which is just enough so the GPS unit shuts down and has to be rebooted all over again.
IF SOMEONE HAS A FIX FOR THIS I WOULD BE VERY INTERESTED IN IT.

Run a hot wire from battery in place of the wire that is there. I wouldn't believe a gps could kill a truck battery over night. this is what I am going to do to the one beside cig lighter.

Off the top of my head I say just wire in a capacitor to the one cig. plug you want to hold the voltage on for a second as you start the truck this may work, I have not tried it yet but would make sense as far as on paper. . The next question would probably be what size, hmmm guess it depends of current draw of the device hooked to the plug, I am sure a little research online will net a good chart.
My cigarette plug turns off with the truck. I haven't ever tried the other one (to the right of the cig plug).
As does mine. My question was based around the fact that I want the one to the right of the cig outlet to shut off as well. Currently it doesn't. Well it does, but only after 2 hours from engine kill. My other question was how much draw would the average PDA or cell phone charger draw when not actually connected and charging, and would this be enough to drain a battery.
Guess I need to find an online calculator and do some figgurin' unless someone here has anything new. Thanks all for the help so far!

If your charger is running off of power outlet for 2 hours only & then shuts off, and charger is only drawing a few mA (.002A) or so from a fully charged battery, it will not run down the battery very much at all...its when the battery starts going "south" after 3-5 years of use that it may be a problem... B.

Sweet. That's exactly what I was looking for. I couldn't imagine that anything like that would draw too much from the battery, but I wanted to be sure. Otherwise it was to be a crash course in Tundra wiring. Thanks one and all for the assistance!

You can buy a power splitter from Radio Shack and put it in your cigarette lighter plug, allowing both devices to power off immediately with the key. There are some molded versions with ring lights and no dangling cords that look tasteful.
I have my Valentine 1 and Pioneer XM wired into the cigarette plug (behind the panel) because I want them off when the key is off and on when the key is on. I charge my phone on the aux plug on the right side because I want it to charge continuously while I'm not in the truck (or at least the 2-hours Toyota set it up for).

Isn't there a wire in the brake-controller plug that's always hot from the battery? I know this is how it's done on aftermarket brake controller installation. If so you could wire your "aux" jack to that circuit and always have pure, uninterrupted power.
If the Toyota trailer wiring cuts power on start-up like the aux jack then the best bet would be to do like CWIT suggested and install a dedicated wire to the + battery terminal (with a fuse or circuit breaker rated for the wire gage). Shouldn't be hard to poke one through the rubber gasket where other wires exit or the steering column exits.

this thing is driving me nuts shutting off too. i like to plug my flashlight charger for work into mine and let it charge over night so i wont forget to get it from the house charger and never fails only a couple of hours and its off. ive done this in every car ive owned and never had a battery discharge over night for a small little charger so to me theres no sense in it. when i get my cover installed next week on my bed im just going to run a constant 12v outlet to the bed and wire it to the battery with an inline fuse to solve my problem. for you guys who need it in the cab, jsut do as suggested above by cwit and wire a new wire to it. cant be too hard.
