When the truck was new, and factory filled with mobil1, my truck had the "mini diesel" sound to it. When I started using penzoil platinum 5w20 at 5K miles, the diesel noise was gone all together. I used the platinum from 5K-15K with no noise. At 15K I ran out of platinum, went to the store and they only had mobil1. Put mobil1 5w20 in and I am back to diesel mode.
Mobil1 has always been a noisy oil in my trucks when compared to others. It's that simple. I would guess most people reporting this are using mobil1 or toyota oil(mobil1). OIl analysis with mobil1 usually shows a higher rate of fe(iron) wear than other oils. Some say the higher fe wear is due to the top end noise we all hear when using it. I have used mobil1 for a long time with no issues with that said. I only stopped using it due to a sale on platinum a while back.
I will have to decide if I want to continue using the mobil1 at the end of this 5K run. I would rather have a quiter engine. If this was posted previously, sorry, didnt read all the posts.

I'm game, I'll give platinum a try. To be honest I'd rather not hear that oil choice can eliminate the noise. I was happier thinking this was an intentional timing advance setting. I've heard this oil brand example before as some have claimed Amzoil has the same quieting effect. Has anyone had luck with conventional oil? I'm starting to think I'm wasting my money on synthetic. Heck I ran conventional in my T100 and never had a problem except at 215,000 when my mother wrecked the truck.

my honda , ford dont make these same noises. Some people dont mind paying alot of money and not getting a top notch product, thats fine. Personally I want mine right and am not 100 % satisfied. I refuse to settle to paying for a name that everyone thinks is the greatest thing when it really isnt that great anymore, Ive owned toyotas for a long time, and they just do not build them like they used to. So dont everyone get their panties in a bunch, Im not a troll, or trying to trash Toyota, I just want my moneys worth and dont feel like Im getting it.

Has anyone else experienced a difference switching oils? Pennzoil Platinum is a synthetic, is it not? Do you still need to change it every 5K? It would be worth the expense if it got rid of the cold engine diesel sound.

You still need to change at 5K with synthetic for warranty reasons. Yes, platinum is a full synthetic, well group 3 synthetic at least. IF one were to go to bob is the oil guy .com(, It is a great site, I have been over there for years) you can read numerous posts about mobil1 being a "louder" oil. Not to say it is bad, just noisy. SOme say it is because it is thinner than other oils, therefore less ability to dampen noise. The cst is lower than most oil usually, so maybe that is it. WHo knows. Either way, using it wont blow up the engine. I have used it in all my trucks, and it is just noisier.....
I was happy with the platinum. It worked well, and was only 2.74 per quart due to buy one get one free sale a while back. I would have gotten it again but not at 5.95 per quart when I could buy a 5 gallon jug of mobil 1 for 21.00.
I'm sure you could get the same noise dampening results using a 5w20 dino oil as well. I only use synthetic because I plan on keeping the truck a long time, and plan to go to 10K drain intervals after warranty. I want to keep everything nice inside so when I do go to 10K drains, its as clean as it could be to start off with.
I havent used it, but I am thinking about trying valvoline synpower synthetic oil. Advance auto is having a buy one get one free deal, works out to 2.74 a quart. Any synthetic is good for 5K drains, and I wont spend 6 bucks a quart to drain so quick. Finding sales makes it easier to justify while under warranty for me.

ok guys this is what i think.
when the motor is cold i am almost sure that the intake baffles are adjusted to a different place from where you normally hear a warm engine(for those who dont know- our motor has variable intake runners to increase tourqe in the lower revs and more hp in the upper along with cam timming) durring that time the rpm's are unusally higher and the noise is amplified kinda like a megaphone, the injectors are cycling quite abit along with the wooshing noise from the fan. all of which are alwasy present sometime during normal opperation, but you are usualy driving not picking up the news paper from the driveway.
i think my motor is also a little noisy when cold but. in no way abnormal.

i am not a mechanic by trade but i have been through a few years of R.O.P auto repair
i do know what a crap motor sounds like warm and cold and i know for a fact all the noise from mine sound a-ok.
besides, of all the scrutiny the truck of the year goes through from motor trend and they did not even mention noisy motors. im more worried about my tailgate.

I've got 2200 miles on my 07 and I've got the same noise problem.. What bothers me most is that on cold start cranks it idles at 1500 rpm and takes about 31/2 minutes to get down to 1000 rpm. This seems to be too many rpm for cold starts. Any one else haveing this prob.

The truck was designed to do everything your mentioned. None of your problems are actually problems but rather characteristics of the engine, ECM, and emissions control.

This thread just came up and may be the answer to our engine noise. Check this out, it sure fixed his diesel sounding engine.

I couldn't find my thread but last time I was in here I talked about My dealer was going to put a new short block in my 07 crewmax, well they did,Mine was a little louder that the diesel sound most tundras make.I was told by my service advisor that toyotas field tech had said that there was something wrong with my short block for sure. The field tech never said what exacly but just told my advisor to order a short block all gaskets and stuff to replace my block.Well after about a week the parts came in and I took my truck to the dealer on 2-4-08 and got it back on 2-13-08.The truck sounds great and over the weekend I put close to 800 miles on it,you can heard the usual ticking from injectors and stuff but no more knocking sound.I'm happy with my truck,I'm supposed to talk to Toyota headquarters tomorrow and let them know how my truck sounds since they're the ones that got the ball rolling for me and also was told by them that they are extending my drivetrain coverage to 7 years for all my troubles, wich I think is very cool from them.I just hope there's no further problems with my engine.

If you do "oil change" yourself, how does this work with the fact change oil with 5k interval? How does toyota tell that the oil has done with every 5kmil? or you have to have it done by toyota dealer?

If you do it yourself, just keep a log of it being done and save your receipts. That's all you need for warranty.
