TundraGeneral discussion forum for the 2007 and later Toyota Tundra.
This is a discussion thread titled "4.7 and proud!", within the Tundra forum, part of the Truck Forums category.
Anyone else love their black sheep of the Tundra family? I bought mine because it was a steal and I could get 4.7 with tons of options for the price of a bare bone 5.7, what about ya'll? Anyone leveling a 4.7 and/or putting bigger tires on? I'm looking to get either a 2.5" or 3"/1" level kit and looking to put some 285 or 305's on, anyone having problems with performance with the smaller engine?
went with 4.7 here. as far as mods i plan on keeping the engine bone stock. It has all the power i need on road and off.
I have some 285 65 18's BFG KO's that im glad i got. Sorta wish i went bigger sometimes though and sometimes wish i went with M/T as well.
Im probably going to do a suspension lift in the future but im waiting for the funds and im trying to figure out what i could do.

I owned a 2000 SR5 4.7 and traded it in late 2004 with 191,000 miles on her. It was a great truck and good engine. In April of 2007 I bought a 2007 DC Limited 4.7 and after 10 months I just traded it. Again it was a good engine. Now I have a Crewmax 5.7 and I like it better.
I think I can speak from experience having owned both models and both engines. The 5.7 is a whole different world and the power is intoxicating. I had a dual Borla system on the 4.7 Limited and it ran and sounded sweet. Average of about 16.4 MPG on everyday use.
I just passed 1800 miles on the 5.7 and I am averaging 16.7 driving it the same speeds and the same habits I did the 4.7. So I will have to say the mpg is actually a little better at this point. Trust me when I say I am not babying the 5.7 in the least.
I really could care less what the Tundra on the road next to me has for an engine. As long as it makes you happy thats what is important. For me it was the realization that I was not a "leather heated seat, power folding mirror, Navigation, 20" tire, zillion speaker JBL guy.
I am running Michelin 275/65/18 Alloys and tomorrow I will have the front hitch receiver mounted for my surf rod rack. When I air down the tires at OBX I will not be overly concerned about a spot of fish blood on the truck.
For me the Crewmax (cloth bucket seats) 5.7 is a TRUCK. It rides like a truck, looks like a truck and it makes me happy. Again, be happy with whatever engine you have. However if you debadge your truck do us 5.7 folks a favor and don't try running a hemi. It makes them think they got away with something.

According to my wife size matters and she would tell you that the 4.7 is too small and provides no thrills like the 5.7. The 4.0 would just have her laughing!
I drove several 5.7s with less equipment, and my 4.7 with far more equipment and came away with the same lease price. I'm happy with my proven engine, but wondering what you guys are seeing with fuel economy. On my old Tundra (04 Double Cab Limited) I was driving all highway, getting about 20 miles per gallon. On the new Tundra (07 Double Cab Limited) I am doing all city driving (I live much closer to work, hence why I got the new truck as a lease...) and getting a computer calculated average of 13 miles per gallon. I'll do my manual calculations soon because I have everything written down...I just want to know what others are noticing for fuel economy. Not that I bought this truck for fuel economy...I could've bought a damn Prius for good gas mileage...

I love my 4.7! I am doing a 3" level lift now, and putting on 33" (undecided) tires. Down the road I am upgrading to the 6" pro-comp with 20" KMC Rockstars with 35's. Also getting an exhaust (undecided), and K&N Intake.
