TundraGeneral discussion forum for the 2007 and later Toyota Tundra.
This is a discussion thread titled "help!!! dash light burnt out, warranty issue?", within the Tundra forum, part of the Truck Forums category.
here's the deal. i the "R" on my gauge cluster does not light up when i put it in reverse. took it to the dealer assuming a warranty fix and they ordered and installed a new cluster...didn't fix! they said they would need to schedule for a troubleshooting session and that it "might or might not" warranty issue since i installed an aftermarket pioneer d3 stereo. is this b.s. or is he being reasonable? second, has anybody else had this problem? i thought i saw this posted before but couldnt find it anywhere...thanks
Assuming that the Pioneer was installed correctly, and not hacked into the Tundra wiring harness, you shouldn't have a problem.
But if the installers cut the wiring harness in order to install the Pioneer, then I would say that Toyota could possibly deny the warranty claim.
Just my .02

When they're doing their troubleshooting, and they find what you just said to be true, I don't see why there would be an issue. They'll find everything in order and the issue to be Toyota's fault. There was another thread recently about when aftermarket installs would void the warranty, and many people agreed that as long as the flaw is NOT found to be caused by the aftermarket product, then it's still a warranty issue...

Bring your factory HU with you and have them plug it in and see that there is still an issue.....

when installing avic d3 or other navi not everything is done with harness plug ins. you also need to get the reverse gear signal (not only for the camera but for the navi to function propely too). granted this is easly done with simple tie in to the proper wire, but it's not harness plug in. since you didn't do it yourself, do you know how did they hook up that signal?
did everything work propely right after avic d3 install?
Your problem is in the transmission mode selector switch - it's not related to the stereo install, unless someone messed with the shifter harness. The said switch is in the shifter asy.

i did do the install myself, as i have many times before...i know its hard to believe but i'm a lot more anal about working on my $30,000 investment than a near minimum wage installer! lol I can assure clean install was done! It is funny that the light malfunctioned before anything was installed aftermarket and the dealer was informed of this but you know the look they gave me when i told them of that! Just a feeling, but they appeared to be trying to "skate" around the problem!

I don't know that they're trying to "skate" around the problem. I think they just want to be perfectly clear and cover their asses in saying that it may or may not be a warranty issue. They just couldn't be certain. I have known several times where the dealership has told someone repairs would be under warranty. As it turns out, the manufacturer may have denied the claim and who gets stuck with the bill? Granted dealerships don't make much money when it comes to warranty work, they typically don't lose money on it either...

Gotcha, appreciate the input! This is my first toyota and i love the truck...i had 3 dodges prior and still like them a lot but this truck is tops by far. My only drawback is that my local dealer hasnt been quite as "nice" as the dealer i had for dodge! I def. can understand them not wanting "stuck" with a cost any more than I want the cost of this repair on my fairly new truck!Maybe i got spoiled, but i like walking away feeling like a human! lol back to the point...any other input on similar problems with the light and what solution was found is much appreciated. TS kicks serious a##, so much info, somebody has the answer for everything!!!!
I can't say that I have ever had a problem with my dealership but you can take your toyota to any toyota dealership for service work.
I have to definately agree with this. I know that those people who drive those upscale Lexus dealerships typically have to drive a little farther if their closest one doesn't do them well. But the Toyota dealerships (at least around here) are I think like 5-7 to 1. So I can drive 4 miles to the local Toyota dealership where I bought my truck or 11 miles to the next closest dealership. And I am one of the lucky ones who frequently get their customer satisfaction index (CSI) surveys. So if I'm displeased, they know it. Working for a corportation that locally owns and operates 4 Toyota dealerships (2 whose inventory I personally oversee) I know the number to dial of all the people who matter if I'm really dissatisfied.
