Default To trade or not to trade?

Hey there folks
I have an 07 tundra DC 4.7 4x4 TRD and Im really wanting that 5.7 now. Im leasing the truck (due to tier 1+ money factor) and am 8 payments in to a 36 month lease. The super low money factor plus the fact that I'm scheduled to deploy with my guard unit in 18 months where the reasons why I chose to lease and not buy.

Of course i'll get hammered at the dealer on trade in, but I want to keep the tundra forever and dont want to pay off a truck that im not 100% about. My buddy says to lease another tundra and get the best deal possible without 'muddying the water' by having negative equity. That would then leave me paying for 2 trucks while trying to get rid of the first one!

Sorry to ramble, i'm just kicking myself for going with a truck that is so basic on options. I really want the 5.7, jbl with leather wheel etc.. I feel like I want the new truck so badly that I'm not thinking clearly - which is where you guys come in! Any thoughts, advice would be great!!

Thanks

If you can afford it go for the 5.7. if you really want to keep it forever, find a way to buy it, not lease. I really know what its like to have a vehicle you're not 100% happy with. I bought a 2005 F150 lariat supercrew totally loaded cause I got a killer deal. I was unhappy before I ever signed. It was a beatiful (imo) truck and ran and drove and rode awesome, but I just wanted a tundra. I'm glad I waited cause the 2007 is much nicer (again imo)than the 2005 I thought I wanted. You only live once man so get what you want. Good luck w/ your decision and w/ your deployment.

I tow a 6,000 lb travel trailer so I went for the 5.7. If you don't tow, don't worry about it; keep the 4.7. I used to tow the same trailer with my 2000 Tundra 4.7.

And yes, you will get hammered if you trade.

I'm not the one to ask. I traded my 9 mo old taco in on my tundy. I was blinded by lust.

I leased because I only drive about 6k a year or so, and did not want to be upside down when I traded it. I will trade because I'm weak. The nice thing about the 36 mo lease is it forces me to keep a truck longer then a year or two.

that said... keep your tundra Why go in way upside down. or... trade it for the bling bling! NO! KEEP IT! yes alex that's my final answer. Keep it. whew that was a hard one...

I feel your pain. I've currently got a 5.7 DC TRD, which I love, of course. BUT it's not 4X4, which I now *really* could use as I do a lot of camping in the summer and desert driving in the winter. Do I trade in for another? Not this year. so sad.

Important for me to mention is that before my obsession with the 4X4 I was I was bemoaning the fact I didn't get the CM instead of a DM. I went through a whole thing where I was going to trade it in a few months after I bought. Mind you I had $1800 in the tonneau cover and like almost $500 in the bedrug. If the salesperson at my dealership wasn't such a jackass, I would be driving a CM today. And I couldn't really have afforded it, either.

Moral of the story? Well, for me, I need to just settle down and find out what I really need. and then maybe do without for a while. I don't know. good luck, man.

This is tough one for me since I'm not sure I'd take my own advice here but you'll be much better off financially if you keep and enjoy your 4.7 for the duration. It's a damn fine truck and you don't want to make these kinds of decisions when you admittedly aren't thinking straight. After you return from your deployment then go treat yourself to the '09 or '10 model loaded up just the way you want it. And when you're finally ready to pull the trigger make sure you buy from a dealer that gives our servicemen and women a discount....you've earned it!

hey thanks for the wisdom guys. I know that its a very poor financial discision but my 'you only live once' and my 'its only money dude' gremlins are running the show right now!

I could definately live with the 4.7 because its beautifully smooth and I don't really tow anything - just haul camping gear, bbq, bikes etc. It just doesn't quite satisfy the mother****er in me that wants to haul some serious *** on the quiet roads near where i live!

So, if I choose to be sensible and keep the truck that I have can I get the leather tundra wheel put on? Id even pay through the nose for it as no doubt it would be cheaper than trading in for another truck. Maybe if I can take care of the little things that bother me I can be happy with her. I can't help but feel like Im driving a rental sometimes - especially with the non leather wheel (vain I know)

Keep it see how it see how it plays out over time, when you deploy you won’t need the Big T and when you get back then see were you are at that time.
I have been so upside down on Trucks like 16K. All in all I drove my old taco after a hand full of trucks. Pay off all upside down of 16K. Got the Bit T due to I was not upside down, but right side up.
Good luck

If the leather wheel would make you happy call or send a PM to Mark at trdsparks.com or on this site and see it he can quote you on it. I've bought from them before...they're good people with price and service to match. Good luck.

But seriously, do what makes you happy if it won't sink your ship financially.

First of all, THANK YOU FOR SERVING OUR COUNTRY!!!

Second, if you can avoid it, don't lease the new truck. You're going to get your a$$ handed to you on the trade, and you'll end up with negative equity stacked on top of more negative equity. You're better off (if your monthly is really tight) financing over a longer period of time than leasing, then buying at the end.

I've leased several vehicles over the years and finally learned my lesson. We've go about 6 months left on the wifes Suburban lease, then I'll be buying something (after I get my a$$ handed to me on the gozillian extra miles) with what little expendable cash I'll have then.

Third, THANK YOU AGAIN FOR YOUR SERVICE!!!

hey guys

Well, I spent 3 hours at the dealer today trying to work a deal but ended up walking away. I felt like they were all in but who knows? I must say, Im really disappointed because that 5.7 was incredible.

Anyways, it was a 08 5.7 DC 4x4 TRD JBL side rails and a few other bits

MSRP is $36393
The crappy part was that they offered $21000 for my 07 DC 4.7 ($30875 payoff)

Best numbers I was offered were :

$36393 for 08
$24488.88 for trade (coming from msrp I guess)
$2500 rebate
---------------
$40329.12 financed (not including tax and title)

payment was $589 for 84 months!!

Do you guys think that they were all in here? I guess I was more blown away by the trade in value than anything else.
