TundraGeneral discussion forum for the 2007 and later Toyota Tundra.
This is a discussion thread titled "Getting the stock NAV to accept DVD output", within the Tundra forum, part of the Truck Forums category.
Do you have 2 generators, or are the 2 switches hooked up to the same one?
2 separate things. One for video, one for NAV functions.
Switch and pulse generator hooked to speed sensor wire and switch with couple relays hooked to back up camera wire for video from overhead unit. Both switches can be on at the same time, but it confuses the NAV completely
I use the pulse generator switch, only when I need to access the NAV locked functions. Like my wife can play with it while I'm driving.
Second switch is used to see what is on at the screen on overhead unit. Makes life easy, when you are trying to choose something from the DVD menu for the kids no guessing involved! Plus sometimes my wife is watching it with the kids to comment on the movie.
Good stuff

I recieved a email from AVElectronic.com saying they now have a system that is plug and play for the 2007 Tundra, nav system, not yet listed on the web page. It is plug and plug, no cutting wires. 2 sets of audio/video inputs and it is controled from the radio button. you might want to check them out.
Interesting. So I guess you install this box and flip a switch to hijack the video screen of the nav which means easy switching between nav and video (DVD/iPod) display. No red letters at the bottom of the screen and the nav/guidance is as usual.
Did they mention a price? I'm liking it at $100 but will pass at $200.

Set up with the back up camera is only a switch plus couple relays. Although my set up is using FM module to transmit the sound from overhead through the radio(came with overhead). With the other unit it may need to be added, but it is not that expensive.

Yes sounds interesting, I shot them a email to check cost on this and the other multi input unit too and asked about plug and play for the tundra. So now we wait and see what they say on price and fit.
I went ahead and ordered one because their order system is simply a request for an invoice. With no price mentioned I'm guessing that the price is flexible. I'll bet they would be receptive to a special price for TS forum members. I say we hold out for this, especially, since this can also be a DIY modification.
I like the fact that the nav would keep functioning and giving directions while the monitor displays video and eliminating the "Check surroundings for safety" message that will always show on the display if the backup camera input is used.

Just callled AV electronics to get a price on the plug and play unit. Price is $450. Seems a little steep.
Yeah, $450 is steep, especially since they don't seem to completely document what features you get with each individual installation. I guess I'll simply wait for Wile E's documentation of his method. I have a feeling his will cost about $4.50 total.

Yeah I got the same email this morning and at this time don't think its worth the cost right now. I did get my SPG installed with a switch and its working great. I did add a second switch while I was back there to allow me to switch the backup camera on any time too. Guess if I want to use that input later, I just add a few more wires to intercept the rear camera input and allow me to switch another input in so I could then feed say my rear headrest DVD video into the NAV unit on the rear camera input and deal with the check msg on the screen for now.
Oh I did notice while I had the NAV unit out there a extra 6 or 8 pin plug wonder if thats were the stock rear entertainment system would wire in, hmmmm. I am with you and going to wait and see if Wilee comes up with a way to feed a secondary input to the Nav screen.
Could you outline, briefly, how to wire the switch to turn on the backup camera? Thanks.

I posted a thread many months ago about how to enable the video via the rear camera input. It included pics and links to wiring diagrams. It is pretty easy, a simple toggle switch on the REV line into the NAV. Only issue is the disclaimer text which appears, and I am working on the next mod to enable the rear DVD input while in motion to get around this, but honestly I have been using the rear camera method for months and I don't even notice the disclaimer now. It is also nice to watch the rear camera on demand. So I suggest that you checkout my old thread for a cheap and quick solution in the interim, unless you have $450 to spend and want to try the device posted above. Those over-priced solutions are the reason I keep inventing - just isn't fair for them to gouge people like that.
Note: I receive many messages about the NAV Speed Pulse Generator so I continue to build them for people on request. If you want one then just PM me via this forum and include your email address.

WileE
Yeah guys its rather simple a matter of adding a switch (SPDT used same switch as I did for SPG) to the Rev wire to the NAV head unit. I found all the information I needed from WileE posts lots of good information hes got about different things and what wire does what. If your to lazy to search for WilieE post which I found to be alot of great information in general.
All I did was wire a +12V source to the switch and intercepted the green wire next to the speed wire you tapped your SPG (K6 I think it was) to which made it easy since I was back there already and thats all there was to it. So when the switch is in normal state the rear camera only comes on when you go into reverse and when the switch is on it toggles the +12v to the NAV unit to fool it into thinking the trucks in reverse. So to add video its a matter of intercepting the rear camera input to the NAV and injecting your own source, a simple relay make it simple. I am thinking it be a easy build to make a simple relay box to do this or as WileE did in his post he added a video switcher which is a great idea then you can have a few different inputs, which was a awsome idea.
