Default Getting the stock NAV to accept DVD output

I'd love to get the stock NAV to accept video input from a portable DVD player by hanging a couple of RCA connections out from under the dash or something. I don't need an expensive rear seat entertainment system. I'd just like to be able to let my passenger watch DVDs up front without risking a ticket from having the portable player sitting on my dash.

One setup seems to be to tap into the feed from the backup camera. I guess that would mean also doing whatever is necessary to turn the camera video feed on while driving. I supposed I need the speed pulse generator. I'm not sure, though, how to get the backup camera video feed to turn on, though. Then, I'm hoping to wipe out the backup video "check surrounding" red letters by replacing the letters in the code with spaces and reburning the nav DVD.

What are your thoughts? Your advice is appreciated.

You do not need pulse generator for DVDs on NAV. You just need to tap into back up camera. Although some relays will be needed and a switch, that will fool the NAV that you are in reverse mode, but relays provide the feed from DVD player, whatever you decide to use, even iPod can work, as long as those RCAs are accessible.
WileETundra did it with his NAV. I did it as well, but with pro help. WileETundra had a description how to on his site. Under NAV DVD player hack.2007 Toyota Tundra Mods by WileETundra
Pulse generator is tapping into a speed sensor wire. So I have 2 switches (Chiplee thanks those are looking good). One to play DVDs in my case it is from overhead. Second to access the NAV functions. Here you go.

I'm looking forward to Wile E's update on the video-to-nav hack. I have been trying to alter the LOADING.KWI file of the NAV 7.1 using a hex editor to replace the characters in "Check surroundings for safety" with spaces in order to clear the backup screen of this text for watching video on. There are over a dozen iterations of this string in there. Thus far, I have been unsuccessful in burning a DVD that will work. I would love to continue this trial and error but I'm making too many dual-sided DVD coasters. I haven't unhooked the fuse to reset the nav yet. Perhaps making it boot up from the modified DVD will work. Anyone have any ideas about how this might work?

I'm wondering whether the hex editor simply doesn't save the modified file in the exact same way. I'm thinking there is something in the software that prevents anyone from simply altering the LOADING.KWI file with a hex editor.

Why is it that some Nav with DVD can play with the brake pedal down and the thing in park. I have heared the 06 and back models can do this and how about the Lexus Nav with a jack for Ipods with video

That all depends on what restrictions are programmed into the nav software version.

My DVDs did burn fine. But when I was trying to boot the Nav from them, all the attempts failed. So I considered those as a coasters as well.
Would love to see some one mode that, even though it does not really bother me.

Go to this site and do a search for TOYO1. It is an interface part that lets you input other sources of video AND AUDIO into your factory navigation. You will need to wire a switch to give it a ground input (it will simulate either revers or a parking brake). IMO this is the BEST way to do it.

Well, after numerous attempts to modify the text of the backup screen it looks like something is hanging up the boot process midway through. The map files work fine but on a cold boot the blue line goes half way across the screen (loading indicator), there is a system beep and it starts over again. This is progress, though, because at least I have a DVD-ROM that the nav can actually read, now. I ran out of blank DVD +R DS's from which to make coasters so I'll have to see if the CompUSA that is closing for good has them at a good price.

Just look at my post above and get that part. Then you can add an aftermarket DVD player (or game system - e.g. Playstation) to your stock NAV. You could mount it is so many different places - glove box, center console, etc.

Do you need contributions to help defray some of the intial costs of the excellent mod you are working on? I would be more than willing to contribute a 10 pack or more.

Exactly the same thing is happening to me

Zpaul, if you're getting the same thing, then there might be something about the hex editors that fail to preserve the integrity of the LOADING.KWI file. One way to check this would be to open the original file in the hex editor, make a change to one word or something, save it, and then change it back. If the hex editor works perfectly, then the LOADING.KWI file should be back to its original state.

Thanks for the offer of the dual-sided DVDs. I don't give up easily, though, so I'll probably get another pack and burn through them, eventually. I'll probably wait until I can display DVD video on the nav by doing Wile E's mod whenever he is finished documenting it.

Unless a purchased hardware interface has its own video display function I'm pretty sure the "Check surroundings for safety" text will still appear. If someone has done it and posts the results here, it would be appreciated.

Hey no problem, I hear you on the not giving up part, I hate it when someone says "you can't do that" makes me work even harder. I just wish I knew/understood more about hex editing to give you a hand. The offer still stands on the pack of DVD's you know us "software enthusiasts" have to stick together

Do you have 2 generators, or are the 2 switches hooked up to the same one?
