TundraGeneral discussion forum for the 2007 and later Toyota Tundra.
This is a discussion thread titled "Factory Remote Start Install Instructions Here", within the Tundra forum, part of the Truck Forums category.
I'm a noob here and didn't do an extensive archives search on this one, but I figured this may be of some use to yall. My new Tundra (bought yesterday!) did not come with Remote Start. It's a handy thing to have here in Colorado, so I bought the necessary parts:
08586-oc910 Remote Engine Starter ~$350
08586-oc920 Hood Switch ~$50 (for vehicles w/o alarm)
I'm planning on installing it to save a few hundred $. I obtained a copy of the 35 page, Official Toyota Installation Manual (TIPS sheet I think it's called). Page 1 is attached below. You can email me for the entire 8MB pdf at elliotisanokguy(at)yahoo(dot)com. It's a long install procedure... but the instructions are very meticilous, with plenty of images and surprisingly good engrish.
I'm still waiting for my hood switch. Once it arrives next week, I will steel myself for the install. Wish me luck!
Re: Factory Remote Start Install Instructions Here
save $50 and return the hood switch. You don't really need it. It's only a safety feature so you don't lean on your remote and start your engine while you have you hands in it. You can get any pin switch for a few bucks and get the same result.
Re: Factory Remote Start Install Instructions Here
Don't pay to have it installed!! The dealership would rip you off, and I'd bet a stereo type shop would overcharge as well. If you felt like taking a vacation to AZ, I'd put it in for you.
Re: Factory Remote Start Install Instructions Here
did u research the factory remote start first? im thinking of it too, i like to keep factory accessories on the truck if i can but from what i read it turns off when u open the door unlike GM remote starts or aftermarket ones and the range on the remote alot of people complain about it not being far enough to start the truck from inside a house or office...let us know how it comes out.

Listen carefully folks! DON'T WASTE YOUR MONEY ON A TOYOTA REMOTE STARTER! I love my 08 tundra but I hate the starter. It's really a joke. I put an after market remote starter on my Silverado in 03 and its way better that Toyota's.
#1 The Toyota starter has extreamly short range. I can't be anywhere in my house and have it work except at the front picture window looking at my truck in the driveway 35 feet away.
#2 It only runs for 10 minutes period. It's not adjustable like the after markets.
#3 It shuts off when you unlock the truck. This is the stupidest thing I've ever seen. They tried to tell me its a security feature so no one can steal the truck. Huh? With my Chevy if you don't have a key in the ingnition and turned on then when you press on the brake or try to put it in gear, it shuts down. Simple.
#4 If my truck sits in the driveway overnight, the next morning it won't work unless I re-lock the truck, wait several minutes then try it again.
Bottom line, this expensive feature is worthless.

That clarify things. I'll pass on the factory one. #3 and #4 would be the killer issue. I know that the factory range is very limited, so the remote start wouldn't be as useful. So #1 is pretty important too.
Re: Factory Remote Start Install Instructions Here
Thanks for the info. Any recommendations on a aftermarket unit. I have a extra remote on my key chain to pop open my bed cover, and another remote for the garage door (which I usully leave in the truck). Ideally I would like to get an aftermarket alarm with remote start that will also have an option to add bed cover opening feature. I am sure it is all possible but do not think I could tackle it myself. Any advice would be very helpful!

I have the same issues except for #4. No problem with that but I can add one.
#5 If your check engine light is on, like when the power steering pressure sensor fails, the engine starts, runs about five seconds and shuts itself back off because "something" has turned the CEL on. My factory remote has not worked since early February, still no replacement switch available.

I have the Viper 5900 security system with remote start and all sensors. Has a one mile range. I have started it from 1/2 mile down the road from my house but haven't tried further away yet. The hard tonneau, tailgate, all windows, doors, hood and wheels are sensored. A little pricey but worth the money due to the thouands of dollars invested in audio components. Not to mention the new 22" TRD wheels I am having put on in the morning.

Re: Factory Remote Start Install Instructions Here
My Buddy who is a master tech, advised me not to go with the Toyota remote start, range sucks and not worth the cash, he recommended the two way AUTOSTART model without the display. Range is 3500' and it works excellent, it has come in real handy this winter.
