TundraGeneral discussion forum for the 2007 and later Toyota Tundra.
This is a discussion thread titled "Rust already?!?", within the Tundra forum, part of the Truck Forums category.
My 2007 Tundra hasn't even made it through the first winter! The large chrome trim around the front grill is already showing rust spots. Anyone else have this issue?
I live in Colorado, but they don't use much salt here (mostly sand). I wash my truck frequently. Seems strange to see sign of corrosion so early...
Sounds to me like a material/manufacturers defect with the plating - I'd take it in and go for a warranty claim.

Many posts on here regarding corrosion, esp bumpers fog light area, mine has major rust issues..also 1-2 folks claiming their dealers are replacing the bumpers after a little fighting.claims toyota has fixed the problem???I have yet to go in...but would love to know if this is the case..mine is less than 5 months old around 6000 miles and looks horrible.i have cleaned the truck weekly and detailed it twice including chrome polish where applicable...$37,000 grand for truck that is rusting in this time frame is rediculous absolutely love this truck..but can't imagine what it is going to look like at this rate of corrosion.. anyone had any luck with their dealers???
I am experiencing the same thing with regards to rust spots. I believe Gkeas contacted Toyota and they said they would not warranty the bumpers for rust because of environmental conditions here in CO, namely the use of Magnesium Chloride for the roads which is a salt that increases corrosion. It's unfortunate but I am to the point where I will probably Line-X both the front and rear bumpers.

Here's a pic of my 07 DC with a little under 7000 miles. Bought it new early October. The rust under fog light is not as visable as truck is dirty. I have not attempted to polish yet as truck wll visit the dealer pretty quick.
I have been going to the dealer about once a month to file complaints and was told by the service writer that he will make sure I get a fresh set of bumpers come spring time. Just gotta keep haunting them.

Both the chrome on my 07 Tundra and 06 Avalon are rusted after one winter here in CO. Makes you mad when you have a $39g car and $37g truck and after one winter the chrome looks like ***, My neighbors Ford and GMC which are like 3-4 years old don't look like that.
Although the state if Colorado says Magnesium Chloride doesn't do any harm, they are very much mistaken, really we should file a class action suit against the state. The dealers and auto manufacturers will not warranty any chrome in this state due to the use of Magnesium Chloride.
Even my Lexus has experienced this same issue, what the word is after EVERY snow fall you should wash your vehicle asap. I have the probem on my Lexus, they told me to pound sand, I expect the same on the Tundra, it isnt really rust either, it is a discoloration of the chrome and once it happens you cant fix it.
Be careful because it will also go after your aluminum and chrome wheels.
