Default 07 5.7 Engine Knock

Has anyone gotten a solution to a knocking sound in an 07 Tundra with the 5.7L engine? I saw a thread from last year but never saw whether that person received a solution. We started hearing the knock after about 13,000 miles. It continues to knock after warm up. We have been to the dealer several times and a regional rep came to hear it. He stated it was no problem and only would give us an extended warranty (we had already purchased the extended warranty so they were going to reimburse us, not seen yet). We are taking back to dealer in 2 days and would be good to know if anyone else had the problem and received a solution. This is not just a cold start problem.

I have a slight knocking/deisel sound when the engine is cold soaked. It has done it since new. I now have 4500 miles on it. Doesn't seem to be a problem, and since many of these engines are doing this I assume it is just a characteristic of the engine. Haven't heard of any problems arising from this issue. Maybe this is not the same knocking that you are having though.

I'm thinking about changing to 5w/30. that's what my dealers use. they say the 5w/20 is too thin.

When I took my Tundra 5.7 in for the first oil change, the dealer only had 5w-30 in stock. Did not have the time to argue, so let them do the change. It made no difference in the cold knock that I have experienced since it was new. Am now back to using the recommended 5w-20, and no difference in noise between it and the 5w-30. It quiets down as soon as I have driven a couple of miles, so I am not going to worry about it. Have almost 8K miles now, and the noise is the same as new. No other problems with the truck so far. Dealer says that this noise is normal for this engine. I have the lifetime powertrain warranty, so if anything happens, dealer will fix it.

Same here, I have always used Mobile 1 5W20, the knock or noise is obvious when cold and gets harder to notice as it warms up. 15000 miles so far, runs the same as it did when it was new, now metal in the filter, pulls like a freight train. I guess it is normal.

EXACT same thing GM did to me. They sent a rep also. They offered to pay my extended warranty off. Mine had piston slap. GM Piston Slap -- Like a Knock My Tundra has it too but at least it goes away with the warm up. All the car companies are using the same excuse "its normal" After saying NO to the "PAYOFF" And thats what it is a PAYOFF to make you go away. I threated to get an attorney that had won a class action lawsuit for about 300 people who had the "piston slap" problem with GM. GM had to buy them back. Then the dealer called me and GM decided to exchange the truck. I couldnt have asked for more. But it knocked too among 9 trips to the dealership in less than 2 years and being left with a dead truck on the side of the road twice. Thats why I have a Tundra now. Wish the bed didnt "flex" (bounce)

I am pretty sure there is a guy who got a new engine on this forum from engine knock(piston slap). Try running a search for piston slap.

Nope, both ours are dead quiet when cold other than a very slight normal to be expected timing chain noise when cold.

piston slap is extremely common. being as the pistons are aluminum and the wrist pins steel, they expand and contract at different rates. well they are made undersized so when they heat up they fit better and dont cause too much stress on the piston. problem is sometimes they get too undersized and you get piston slap from it. nothing is going to come apart or anything but i woulnt tolerate it thats for sure.
