TundraGeneral discussion forum for the 2007 and later Toyota Tundra.
This is a discussion thread titled "new 08, 1st oil change?", within the Tundra forum, part of the Truck Forums category.
hi, i just got my new 08 tundra and while the salesman assured me that an early oil change isn't necessary i'm not so sure, how soon did most of you guys do your first oil change, also is it just regular oil in a new truck or is there "special" oil in a new truck, thanks.
every 5k miles. no need to do one early....some here argue that but those of us who do what the manuf and dealer say have never had any problems.....regular oil.....its just a truck. same thing as anything else normal out there. unless u CHOSE to run synthetic..but then again those of us who dont unless its called for never have issues either.
I was told that it came with synthetic from the factory????
i may be wrong...u may be right. and it may matter 4.7 vs 5.7 (i have 4.7). i havent read the book because it doesnt matter to me, i take it in and they deal with it. but someone out here who actually wants to know or needs to know, check your glove box. theres a wealth of information in a book called an owners manual.
Correct me if I'm wrong, but once you go with sythetic you have to stick with it..... right? If this were true, Toyota would have to spec. synthetic oil only in vehicles that come from the factory with synthetic oil.

Guess this would answer question partially Switching From Conventional Motor Oil to Mobil 1
If factory installs 0W20 Dino i guess they have their own supplier of a weight/brand of oil that no one else manufatures not many fluids left that are not synthetic and they have a new 0W30 out now that would be of use to certain people depending on your location.

Changing to Synthetic Oil in a New Car
salesman proably drives a clunker and never even changes his oil except when he adds another Qt., I did my first at around 1500 miles and been running Mobil 1 5W30 then swapped to 5W30 Truck & SUV when it came out and no problems yet! You can put whatever oil you want in it per Toyota Specs as long as ya change every 5K, your choice and if ya let Toyota dealer change your oil Good luck becasue it is no telling what they will put in. Probably will not hurt your engine but it just might not be to your standards? or even what you paid for!

Yea I use 0W30 Briggs and Stratton oil in my lawn mower.

You are wrong. I have heard that crap about not mixing synth with conventional, but I always argue back that there are synthetic blends on the market (synthetic and conventional blended - go figure)!
I do my oil change every 5k miles, I don't think it matters if you go with synthetic or regular. Synthetic is suppose to last longer, but most people switch it out like regular so dosen't really mattter. I used the Quakerstate 5w-20 works fine for me and my truck.
