TundraGeneral discussion forum for the 2007 and later Toyota Tundra.
This is a discussion thread titled "LOL! Wow you guys were serious about Bed Bounce", within the Tundra forum, part of the Truck Forums category.
I took my Tundra to Astoria, Or from Seattle, Wa and on some of the roads driving at 65mph the rear bed would hop up and down agressively and I was totally amazed and embarrassed.
I always thought the bed bounce thing was just about the rear suspension was so stiff that it caused the rear end to bounce. I did not realize it was the actuall bed that was bouncing. WTF!!! I still love my pickup, but it's no where near the "Truck" quality of my 05 Ram. I put my Ram up against the Tundra any day.
Toyota has a lot of home work to do regarding the new Tundra.
Next time I read.... "The Tundra is a 3/4 ton pickup" I will be laughing my @ss off!

Your Tundra will kick all gas 3/4 ton pick-ups. Most 3/4 ton diesel owners wish they had the Tundra.
Re: LOL! Wow you guys were serious about Bed Bounce
ok....so yet another bed bounce thread...is this affecting perhaps just a certain configuration? perhaps just teh 5.5 ft Crew max bed? (i know the ford youtube video is a DC standard bed but that vid is so far fetched its not bed bounce, its abuse). perhaps its something with weight distrubution involving the 5.7 motors up front as i havent noticed any 4.7 owners posting bed bounce concerns....just wonderin if theres a common thread in these bouncers for those who have it. obviously its not all trucks or we would all have it, so lets see what the common denominators are..
4.7 DC standard bed 2wd TRD SR5- no bed bounce here..
Re: LOL! Wow you guys were serious about Bed Bounce
My 5.7 DC regular bed has it and so does my friends 5.7 short bed crew max. He came from a 2004 Tahoe and hates the ride of his crew max, wishes he could smooth it out. I only use mine as a truck, so I don't care, his is a daily driver.
Re: LOL! Wow you guys were serious about Bed Bounce
5.7 CrewMax. I have never experienced it. However, I have only driven it on Texas and Louisiana highway. I'm sure it depends on the frequency of the bounce. I do believe people who experience it, though, if it's something that can be seen from another vehicle.

Re: LOL! Wow you guys were serious about Bed Bounce
StatCoder is on the right track when he mentions frequency. Everything ever built has a natural frequency. It's a function of mass and stiffness. Bed bounce is simply driving over a road with just the right spacing of surface defects at just the right speed to create a vibration input to the truck that matches the truck beds natural frequency. When the road vibration frequency matches the rear frames natural frequency then you have resonance....which means the input (road bounce) is magnified substantially and all hell breaks loose.
It's a tough design problem to avoid....especially if you go for a stiff frame. Add plenty of dampening like my mushy piece of junk 2006 F150 and it's no problem. I think Toyota will make some minor refinements in the next model years to solve it. With a new vehicle...you build it and do your best.
The u-tube videos are pure exploiation. Pick any vehicle out there and push it til you hit a resonance situation....then start your video camera!!!
Ever see the film of the Tacoma Narrows Bridge get torn apart in a 40 mph wind.....that is resonance. Wind excited the bridge at just the right frequency......it comes tumbeling down!!!
Re: LOL! Wow you guys were serious about Bed Bounce
dc 4x4 here, even at slow speeds I can see the bed bouncing and wiggling. On rough repair jobs or joints on the highway it bounces so bad that it upsets the whole truck. It may be just the box moving, but it is a little unsettling seeing your box moving everytime I check my drivers side mirror.
And my truck is brand new. It just hit 1000km yesterday.
Re: LOL! Wow you guys were serious about Bed Bounce
I have never experienced this problem...I do notice that the ride has a little more reverberation than other trucks I've driven. I've read through the other bed bounce threads, but I'm not sure I completely understand it. Probably because I've never directly experienced it. If the bed is bouncing, which is attached to the frame rails, is the frame resonating or is it solely related to the bed? I guess I don't understand what is making it shake so bad. Is it the frame, suspension, bed or a combination of all? I'd like to see someone video tape the truck doing this from an adjacent vehicle.
