TundraGeneral discussion forum for the 2007 and later Toyota Tundra.
This is a discussion thread titled "Damnit! Don't make this mistake!", within the Tundra forum, part of the Truck Forums category.
So I checked after I put my 305/55/r20's on several times: At hard over, the tires came within about two inches from my skid plate, but not close enough for concern, or so I though. I was going into a parking garage today and going up from one floor to the other, I had the wheel cranked all the way over and when the slope changed from flat to 30 degrees or so (a bit of a bump) I hear this awful noise and immediately turned the wheel out of the turn. I checked the driver's side tire and sure enough, a nice slice about a quarter inch deep into the outermost tread about a third of the way around the tire. Man am I pissed. I went straight home and hacked the hell out of my skid plate.
If you've got this size tire, don't be stupid, just trim your skid plate. Lesson leared.

man i know your not a newbie around here from your 300+ posts. you should have known that you have to trim the skid plate with the 305's. good luck with your tire.
Yup you hafta figure in a couple extra inches of clearance between tire and skidplate with those really tight turns where the wheel is at full lock and you are approaching a steep incline...With any car at full lock it will force the tire to turn a bit further than on a flat surface just from the weight of the vehicle and the off camber situation. Lesson learned...oh well. Have a few beers and forget about it!

I know, I know, I'm so obsessive about these things too. It just bugs me to no end!

Tin snips, a pair of vise grips and a hammer. I probably went a little overboard, but considering how pissed I was that I made that mistake, I just had to.
Do you guys know of a glue or high end sealant I can use to put in between where the tire is cut? I don't want chunks coming off and there are a few places where it's a clean cut that I could just fill in.

Would an aftermarket skidplate be of concern as well? I mean, are the width deminsions about the same as the OEM plate? I mainly say this because, if you can cut your skidplate with tin-snips, that thing isn't protecting you from much

To tell you the truth, I was thinking the same thing when I was cutting it. They are good snippers though, pretty rugged. The factory skid plate isn't really meant for much more than hitting a small rock or two. It's better than it hitting your engine parts I guess. My opinion is, if you're going off-road, get a better one.

I'm scared to hit tumbleweeds with my factory skid plate
Probably because you have aftermarket rims with different backspacing...He has the factory 20's. His sit further in the wheel wells to begin with...IMO
