TundraGeneral discussion forum for the 2007 and later Toyota Tundra.
This is a discussion thread titled "Diesel/clacking when cold", within the Tundra forum, part of the Truck Forums category.
I noticed this morning that the diesel/clacking noise my engine makes when cold is more noticeable inside the cab than it is outside. I rolled my windows down and really could not hear that much noise when accelerating, but when I rolled the windows back up I could hear it. Is this the same with you guys? I have to say it really bothers me that my engine makes this noise, regardless that it is not causing damage. It makes me feel better that it may not be as obvious to bystanders than I first thought. It is rather embarrasing to have such a beautiful & awesome truck that everyone wants to look at and ask questions about, then when you drive off they think your engine is about to crap out.

I guess my point was not clear, is the sound more noticeable in the cab than outside or is it just my imagination. I've read the other posts on this topic, but I don't see where this was addressed.

Has anyone with over 20,000 miles checked compression in all cylinders... as long as all are within spec, it will put to rest the idea of piston slap causing sidewall and piston damage.

I am very confident that the noise I hear in my 5.7 is the valve train. I imagine pretty much everybody elses is valve train noise as well. I only ever hear mine when the engine is cold.
Food for thought - 32 valves, 4 cams, VVT and about 9,000,000 other misc parts in the valve train that all need to work together at high temperatures and high RPM. If everthing was tight as a drum when it was stone cold(wouldn't rattle) imagine how tight it would be at temp when everything expanded. The engine would last about 20min!!
I haven't noticed the noise since changing my oil. I used Mobile 1 full syn 5w-20w. The engine produces less noise at high RPM as well.
EDIT: Didn't mean to sound like an oil salesman there... Used to use Castrol full syn but couldn't find it in 5w-20w here.

Sorry Redram99, I DON'T buy your theory. I have a 4.7 L engine with the same amount of valves and NO noise EVER. Smooth and Quite ! ! !
Something may come of this down the road. It might not be until 50 - 70 thousand miles but something will surface sooner than later. I just hope Toyota will step up to the plate when the time comes, unlike the bed bounce problem that they have done NOTHING about for over one year now ! ! !

My brother heard it in my Tundra when we were hunting. I told him I already had 8,000 miles on the truck and haven't had the oil changed. Then asked him if he thought I should at least check the level of my oil. You should have seen the look on his face LMAO. I've been in several 5.7 Tundras and they ALL did it. I'm really not concerned at all.

You have a timing belt and one thing Redram didn't mention, the 5.7s have 4 timing chains which I can faintly hear in mine and also my wife's Tundra during cold startup for a minute or two.

Looks like everybody a something diffrent to say. really when it comes down to it. if other tundra owners are not talking about it. You need to take it in to have it worked on. It could be so many things. To pin point it to a part without hearing it in person is impossible. Remember that these engines have alot of aluminum and can shrink when cold. Thats why is gets better when the engine warms up.

Your 4.7 doesn't have a timing chain like the one in the 5.7.The reason that belts are chosen over chains is that they are quieter. On the other hand chains last longer.
Titan 5.6 is a similar engine which makes no noise on cold start. The Titan does not have variable valve timing on the intake, just the exhaust. I'm surprised the source of this noise has not been figured out yet.
