TundraGeneral discussion forum for the 2007 and later Toyota Tundra.
This is a discussion thread titled "Looking for smoother riding shocks "on road"?", within the Tundra forum, part of the Truck Forums category.
I have a2007 4x2 double cab Tundra. I have the BBS 20" wheels and 305/50/20 Michelin Cross Terrain tires. I would like a smoother ride and was wanting to know what shocks are available for the 4x2 Tundra. I would like some Bilsteins but I could not find any that fit the 4x2. All the shocks I have senn are for the 4x4 trucks. Any advice?
As far a TRUCK Shocks go the stockers are pretty well mannered, trying for an upgrade would most likely have you paying for a brand name instead of actually getting a different ride.
Ive run the Bilstiens on my previous Chevy's (2wd/4wd)and never saw anything justifying their price.
Actually their off road shocks are pretty cheesy and dont last very long under Level 1-2 Off Road Applications
I just put a set of Rancho RS9000XL's on the back they are fully adjustable, you can set it up stiffer or softer. Definatley an improvment over stockers

If you finds ones for a 4x4 let me know. We seem to be the only ones looking for a comfortable ride, as almost every spring and shock made is stiffer than stock to give the truck "more control." I got the Rancho RS9000XLs in hopes of a better ride and am sending them back and going back to stock because the Ranchos are stiffer even on the lowest setting.

Totally agree....this has been my experience also. Many equate stiffer with better. There is nothing wrong with this if stiffer is what you want, but I don't either.
Usually all you can do is reduce tire pressure, and sometimes certain tires ride better at a given pressure than others do at that same pressure.
I have come across a couple small exceptions. Edelbrock IAS shocks did improve the ride on an old Chev truck compared to the stock shocks. Edel still makes these, but YMMV just in case, as you rightfully state, they may have redesigned them for "more control".
Another example was the original BFG Velvet Ride rear shackles. They did take the edge of the ride harshness on an old Chev I had. They did not turn a truck into a Cadillac, but you could notice some improvement. The latest versions "Sulastic" do not offer any improvement though.
