TundraGeneral discussion forum for the 2007 and later Toyota Tundra.
This is a discussion thread titled "Need Help Fast - Sunroof Problem", within the Tundra forum, part of the Truck Forums category.
Hey guys, sorry for posting this here but I know it'll actually get attention here in the Tundra forums. Mods, please don't move it at least for a day or two - thanks.
Well here's the dilemma. It's an '03 4runner SR5 V8 with the sunroof. It will not close. It has about 70K miles on it and this is the first sunroof related issue. The kicker is that it is supposed to rain tonight or tomorrow. Cloth seats doesn't do well with rain.
I am in search of trash bags to cover the big hole. I will be looking forward to seeing your guys' responses to this one.
Some more info - it will attempt to close but the actual sunroof won't move. The wind flap will go down and then rise back up when it gives up. Any help is appreciated, thanks guys!
PS. Sorry I haven't been here for the past few days - vacation. More writeup on the Tundra vs our 4runner and '07 Sport Trac later when I have a few.

Find the motor access panel for the sunroof motor and there will be a way to manually close it.
I don't know where the access cover is, but if I find it before someone else chimes in, I'll post back.

Well thatnks for the quick replies guys. We got the trash bags and taped 'em up. Before that we disconnected the battery and waited a bit. The sunroof luckily closed even though it made a few stressed/loaded sounds.
If I weren't on my dad's crackberry I'd give a more in depth report on it.

More than likely the Sunroof is out of time. If you were to open it half way you would notice one side is ahead off the other. This is fairly common on the 4Runners. There is some grease on the rails for the little pop up wind deflector that hardens like concrete over time.To fix it properly you need to remove the wind deflector, and clean all of the old grease out. Then lube it up with some white lithium grease. To retime the roof you will have to remove the motor. To do this take down the front Dome light/sunroof control. Then you will see three 10mm bolts take those loose that will drop the motor. Then Manually pull the roof back to about half way. Using a tape measure make sure the roof is even. Reinstall the motor then reinitialize it. To do this just hold the close button till the roof closes then opens all the way up. That should get it going. If you have someone who can access TSBs I think there is one on the 4runner for this entire procedure. I know there is one on the GX470 for it you could use it the roofs are almost the same.
