This is a discussion thread titled "Oil Filter Leaking", within the Tundra forum, part of the Truck Forums category.
Ok this is the third oil change on the truck, did it last night after work. I have done them all with out incident. However this morning when I got to work I noticed a strong oil smell comming from the truck. Looked under it and in the area of the oil filter it was soaking wet with oil. I checked my dip stick, from what I can tell I lost 1 quart in the 26 mile drive to work. I am going to add another quart to it and nurse it back home to figure out what happened. Has anybody had this problem before? Like I said this is the third time, so I have had two succesful oil changes in the past. Anysugetions would be greatly appreciated. I will update tonight when I get home and figure it out. Thanks, Ken
Did you place the o-ring in the right location? Take a look at the filter where it is screwed in. If you can see your o-ring extruded then it's in the wrong place. Check the oil change threads here for a photo of the correct placement. Better fix this fast because this can cause catastrophic loss of oil. You may need a new filter element package (and more oil) because you may have torn up the o-ring.

Orings new and all in the correct place upon installation, I even lube them with an oring lube before installing the filter, of coarse can't see them now untill I get it home and remove that cheesy skid plate.
Most likely one or both of the o rings are not seated properly. I have heard that the big o ring that goes around the filter case can slip off(after changing mine I can see how easily that can happen) when you are trying to thread it in.
I really don't know how that can be called a skid plate. Mine is in the corner of the garage where it belongs,I see no protection from this thing.I don't go off road and if I did I would build a better one with a flip down door to get to oil filter.
You are welcome. I still think the most likely possibility is that the o-ring is improperly seated on the filter cap. If you know where the wrong place to put it then that's the only way you know, for sure, that you have it in the right place. There are some pics on this forum but I can't find it yet. In any case, I think you are going to have to be prepared to drain the oil and have a new filter element ready in case one of the o-rings is torn. Hopefully your oil filter cap isn't cracked but nobody has done that here yet.

Thanks for all the help, I agree that 1 or both of the orings has probably slipped out of position. I am an aircraft mechanic by trade and usually very carefull with these kind of things. Oh well we'll see.
CWIT, yea that skid plate is a POS, and a pain in the a$$, but I deal with it. LOL
HRJRKR, I do not have a tordue wrench that low, but they are definatley tight.
Just got finished with it, the large oring moved out of the groove when I installed it and it got pinched. New filter, orings and a couple more quarts of oil, good to go. I test drove it this time a few miles before closing it up with the skid plate.
hrjrkr I think I am going to look into buying a small torque wrench.

It helps a lot if you lubricate the large "O" ring prior to installation, either with engine oil or silicon lubricant. I also just tighten the cap by hand as far as I can before putting a wrench on it. That way I can feel if anything binds up.

Thanks again to all.

After the first install did you start the engine and check for leaks around the filter assy?

Henry T, yes I did start the engine after the first installation, but it was only for a minute enough time to look under and shut it off. That is why I will drive it around the block one time from now on before closing.
LeeinAZ, I do use a oring lube before install, that is why I find it so hard to figure how I did this.
azx33, now that I think about it, thefilter did spin on freely all the way down.
All good stuff to remember, and to be aware of before starting the "Filter Change Sequence"
