Default Anyone thought about swapping in a Diesel?

With the gas prices to triple in the next 6 years ... has anyone thought about swapping a new toyota Diesel into their Tundra? Lexus has a nice 4.5L twin turbo.

Haven't you seen the prices for Diesel gas lately?

Who knows when those are coming down.

It would not make any sense to swap a diesel. Diesel is .50 cents more a gallon in San Diego and the mileage would be worse than what my 5.7 gets now with the new EPA requirements placed on diesels. My neighbor has one of the new Ford Diesels in an F250 and he is getting 11 city and 14 hightway. Even if you were to but a Tundra with the diesel option it will probably have a 4-5k price tag. Unless you are pulling something really heavy, it would be a losing situation. Just my humble opinion....

I agree...Even though a Toyota diesel would be MUCH more efficient than a Ford diesel I still think it wouldn't really make sense to get a diesel unless you really needed the added power for your business or daily towing of 10k lbs plus. If money was not an issue I would definitely get one though. Turbo diesels are pretty sweet.IMO

The Gas would burn more than the diesel, even the 4.7L

I'm averaging 13mpg in my Tundra, no matter how I drive. The 6.6L Duramaxes are averaging 15mpg. The 4.5L would be much better IMO

Diesel is still more expensive than gas though and I know those diesel trucks have HUGE tanks...The Silverado HD's have 34 gallon gas tanks! Knowing my right foot I would be filling up with a diesel just as much as I would with my 5.7 V8.

I threw around the idea of putting a cummins 6bt 12v in my 1st gen, being it doesn't need a computer or anything, but the time, money, and fab work necessary to make it flawless makes it almost impossible. But with the prices of diesel and gas, I think i will stick to my cheaper gas and my 14 mpg.

I average 14.8 MPG right now with a 5.7 liter 4x4 DC. So it would almost be a wash for me. That is hand calculated and no BS. I drive a 2 lane highway with some city driving.

Thats the only motor i would consider putting in, or maybe even a 4bt, but they are not powerful enough. Frame reinforcement would be a major factor, and not to mention fitting that long motor in the engine bay. Then you still have to worry about the radiator, intercooler, transmission and/or transfer case crossmembers to hold everything in place.

That engine would be a perfect fit for the new tundra. This engine is actually only provided overseas due to the quality of diesel over there being so much more clean. Its has less sulfur and wax impurities. The price of diesel is higher to upgrade the quantity and quality of diesel produced in north american refineries. Supply and demand.

Back to the engine, it comes in the new Landcruiser 200, which is same size as the tundra. I have read in a few reviews this combination gets 27mpg combined.

Give me a Crewmax with a 6.5ft box and the 4.5L turbodiesel (D4d) and I'm sold.

If gas is above 9 bucks a gallon in 2014 and you are getting 14mpg it would put with your cost of operations with insurance etc would be well in excess of over a dollar a mile. I will be riding my bike a lot more for sure and I bet a lot of the boasting over horsepower will end.
