I put the SS in yesterday with the Rancho's set on 1. If there was any improvement to the bed shake it was minimal. Ride was not an issue with me, just the bed looks like it's going to fall off when you hit a bump. So apparently when I put the jackstands under the frame rails all I was doing was deadening the shock wave through the frame. I'm back to my square one thought that no amount of spring or shock modifications are going to correct the bed shake.

I also told an electrician on a jobsite about my bed. He has an '08 RC/LB and has no problem. I wonder if Toyota produces all their frames at one facility?

Mark,

I am beginning to think that there might be some problem trucks out there as I drove the I-52 two days ago from Santee to the 805. While there was some whoop de doos, (Natural rises and dips in the road), I never did feel that the bed was bounce anywhere. There is a steady jitter, but it is now worse than some of the other trucks that I owned. From some of the posts, I was expecting to have a whiteknuckle ride. It was not smooth by any stretch, but most trucks don't focus on ride quality. I hope someone figures this out for those who are affected, but I am happy with mine so far.

I guess I am confused on how you think they are going to help.
I don't have this excessive bounce thing and never have.
I felt that maybe the OE springs were too soft. I don't know about you but when I installed mine I first tried the lower bolt hole in the rear but the clearance from the SS to the frame was a little too close. I mounted them in the upper rear hole and lower front hole. On the drivers side I had to install the front bolt from the outside because of the gas tank. I then trimmed off the excess bolt treads. I had to use straps with turnbuckles to pull the spring into position to mount the front bolts. The end result was about an inch or so increase in rear lift so,although their primary function is as an overload, on my Tundra, at least, they're doing plenty with an empty bed. I reset the Rancho's to 3 and there was a little improvement. I would say the bed shake has gone from extremely embarrasing to just embarrassing. The ride is fine and no noise from the springs. If you watch the Two Guys garage installation video on the SS webpage and buy a set of SS's.....you're going to be in for a suprise about the ease of installation.

Dan,

I'm jealous! I drove that EXACT route this past Wednesday as my comparative test of the new springs. YIKES

I have owned three trucks previous to this one (2 Toys, one Datsun - from the OLD days!) and this driving experience is the most bizarre one ever. I know how a truck rides (or should ride). When I decided I wanted a truck again (in preparation for getting a small travel trailer) I only considered the new Tundra. I test drove it all over Poway, highway 67, Scripps Poway Parkway. My mistake was to not take it on the highway. Had I done so, I would not have purchased it. My wife owns a '4 Sienna van and I had a '99 Landcruiser. wonderful vehicles, typical Toya quality. I am quite disappointed in this truck, not only in the ride but Toyota's response so far. They are "sorry" I am not happy. That's it.

I really like the truck except for the frame/suspension flaw. Unfortunately, I have to DRIVE it!

I am happy for those with no issues.

Dare I consider trading for a Chevy Silverado??? Or do I hope that Toyota does something for us odd group of people who have a REAL suspension problem?

I'm not a whiner. I have owned this truck since July '07 and mainly just lurk here - only a few posts about this and that during the last 8-9 months.

Mine is a non -TRD DC Ltd.

For the heck of it.. I lowered my air pressure to the Toyota recommended PSI of 30 front 32 rear. Definitely a smoother ride. The shock wave from hitting a good bump square on doesn't seem as bad as before either. It's still there though but seems to fade a lot quicker than before.

Just for reference sake.. I had 37psi on all 4.

I know this won't or isn't the correct "FIX" for the frame oscillation problem but if the ride is as good as with my shurtrax i will most definately be happy. I have had the shurtrax since Sept 07 and have had it filled to different levels. I have so much water in it now that the internal baffles are shot. I don't mind the shake if it only lasts a few seconds. Its when the shake happens so long that your vision is blurred and you teeth start to chatter. Right now with the shurtrax the ride is tollerable which is all I am going for. But I am still waiting to recieve my mini pack d*** it!!! I sure hope that Greg didn't take my $219 and forget about me. That would really chap my hide.

Try setting the Ranchos at 5 or 6. With my RCSB , it dampens better at these settings. Any lower and it may not have enough damping on the rebound, thus producing the jitter effect. These shocks dampens more on the rebound than on compression. Unfortunately, the ride is stilll gonna be firm BUT smooth. If you want softer ride, then either replace the springs with a softer one or put more weight on the very back of the bed next to the tailgate. Setting on 1 is good for low speed on bad or off roads. I've tried these methods.

Default Installation Questions

I have a couple of questions for those who have done there own driveway installations.
  • When you initially jack the beast up, are you doing so from the differential, or the frame? If from the frame, where?
  • Where is the best place on the frame to put the jack stands?
  • Do you only have to jack the truck up high enough to remove the tires?
  • Is it necessary to pry the stock overload spring off, or does it separate pretty easily once you have removed the U-bolts and center bolt?
I appreciate your input.

Rick

1. Differential.
2. Jackstands under frame ahead of rear wheels.
3. Yes.
4. Yes, most likely will have to do some prying or wiggling.

Check one of my replies somewhere in this thread for more tips.

ART64,

Thanks for the tips. I remember now you talking about the rebound/compression attributes of these shocks. I will try 5 or 6 on this section of road.

Whoa, looks like the cure hit a brick wall. I just wanted to update on my Super Springs and Rancho set up. I increased the Rancho setting to 5 and there is a noticeable reduction in the shake-n-bake and aftershock effect. When I hit a bump the bed still shakes but it recovers right away. I'm going to up the setting this weekend and if it doesn't improve I'll put it back. I'm to a point where, although I'm not happy with the situation, at least I can live with it. But I'll say this right now - There are many things I like about my Tundra, just as there were many things I liked about my Chevy's but, Toyota dropped the ball on this bed bounce design flaw by ignoring it, and has lost sales because of it. As of right now, no more Toyota's for me...... and that's my response.

I'm with you Rackman.. I am by no means a Toyota Fanboy.. In fact this Tundra is my first ever Toyota vehicle and I'm just a wee bit unimpressed with how they choose to handle this issue.. So much in fact that if I were in the market for another truck or car right now. Toyota WOULD NOT be on my list of considerations.

I've dug up complaints on this issue as far back as the first 07's on the road.. Alot of what I read even back then seemed alot of people felt confident that Toyota was working on a fix.. I can't tell you how many things I read that said they called and spoke to Toyota and that a Rep said they were aware of the bounce issue and were working on a fix.

Well, it's 08 now.. Still NOTHING. I called TOyota myself and lodged a formal complaint about the excessive bed bounce and although the lady taking down my information was very polite and sincere in her concern, she said there was no official FIX or even Acknowledgment of the issue on Toyota's behalf that she was aware of.

Pathetic!

I finally imstalled the mini pack and I had to report my results. So far the ride is smoother but still the frame resonation rears it ugly head. It is not as severe as before and seams to tame down faster. I only have the mini pack with out upgrded shocks yet or a sway bar. I would have to say the ride now is almost as good as having the Shurtrax overfilled with 4-500 lbs of water. I am some what satisfied for now as the spring pack may need time to work itself in and may improve but so far so good. Now hopefully my mpg's will come up with having all the ater in the bed!?!?! Also I measured before and after to see what the difference would be and I ended up with a 3/4 inch lift over stock. Not a big deal but I will be lowering the truck later and it won't matter any way.
