TundraGeneral discussion forum for the 2007 and later Toyota Tundra.
This is a discussion thread titled "07 Crewmax Rear End "Clunk"", within the Tundra forum, part of the Truck Forums category.
I am having an issue every time I back out of my driveway or drive in, especially went the truck is at an angle to the curb, I hear this clunk (actually more like a "click") in the rear end. It very annoying and every time I have a new passenger in the vehicle, they ask what the hell that noise was.
I've taken it into the dealer and all they have said is it is the traction control engaging / disengaging. I don't believe it, as it happens even with the slightest amount of power on. I think it is something in the differential or possibly in the suspension as it appears to only happen in turns. I can even reproduce it making a right turn at an intersection.
Anybody have any idea what this is or even if it is a known issue with the truck?
I have a nasty clunk on mine too. I took off my tailgate and the larger clunk disappeared. I still had a small one that was barely audible though. Not sure what that one is.
It's really easy to take off the tailgate. You can do it unless you're worried about scratching those corners on something in the garage.

Mine sounds almost like cracking your knuckle. Is that the sound yours has?
Hmm, not that defined. It's more subdued than that, but I guess I could see a bit of a cracking knuckle sound . Maybe you have some play in the driveline? I dunno.
Might as well eliminate the easy stuff before you take it to the dealer. Make sure the spare is tight, and take off the tailgate. Those are some good starting points for ya.

My first thought is...I'd get on the bumper and bounce up and down, see if it's the leafs wearing in. You can oil them a bit to quiet them down, or it will just take time and/or many bumps.
These items below fit loose and may make noise, check them out as well.
Do you have a hitch in your receiver?
Do you have a rubber bed mat?
Do you have a bed extender installed?
Also, after initial start up, there is a self check of the ABS and/or VSC system at about 15mph, makes a sound like cracking knuckles.
Most miss it cause it happens at the same time as the doors lock.
It's in the manual.

Nope, none of the above. Emptied everything out of the truck just to be sure. Will try taking the tailgate off. Checked the spare, seems good. msxjw, is the cracking knuckles sound occur more than once during the self check? Mine is a single click.

Yeah, the self check sound is a series of clicks, kind of sounds like you cracked all the knuckles, real quick.
Also could be described as a series of small pneumatic actuators going off quickly.
Your single click sure sounds like it could be suspention related to me, so hard to diagnose over the net, please keep us posted.

Another thought, check out this thread for a few ideas as well...
click>>> Bed rattle
I know yours is a click or clunk, but some of the things "could" apply.

Click or Click click (sounds more like "ti tink"
Most probably your brake pads. Most of the time you are driving forward and your pads gets settled in with the forward rotation of your brake rotors in the brake calipers. When you go in reverse, especially with the a steep incline, the brake pads gets snapped backward in the calipers. If you back out really slow (ease of the brake), the click will be smaller or gone. If you gas it and stomp your brakes, it will also be smaller or gone as the click happens so quickly. Try it out and see if my assumption is correct.
Bonk Goosh (sound)
ABS releasing your brake pads.
Thunk
When I leave my office, where there is a steep incline that I always have to stop for traffic. When I am creeping forward, I can feel a thunk if I keep my foot on the gas to creep forward. Maybe you are experiencing something simliar to that. I don't hear it, just feel it.
I don't worry about it as all the cars I've owned that uses electronic controls did it. I figure it's just the torque converter locking or unlocking.
