Skeptics.... YOU ARE MAKING THIS WAY MORE DIFFICULT THAN IT NEEDS TO BE!!! IT WORKS PERFECT!!!
When the seat bottom is locked in place, the seat back is locked in place also...
If you were to get into a crash, everything will stay in place due to everything being locked in place.
The only way that ANYTHING moves is to lift up the lever to lift up the seat bottom. That un-locks the seat bottom, and once that is lifted up to about a 45% angle, the seat back raises up enough to unhook the hooks that are holding the seat back in place.
And Yes, you can still lock the seat bottom in the "up" position and the seat back will stay locked in the up position also. Once you are past the 45% angle that I just mentioned, the seat back slides back down into the hook again.
Do this for a test: Lift the handle to UNLOCK your seat bottom.. Once it is UNLOCKED, lift the seat bottom slowly.. You will see that the seat back starts to slide straight up. This is the action that allows you to "unhook" the seat back once the seat bottom is at about 45% angle. Once you have the seat bottom past this 45% angle (and you keep raising it up to lock it in the "up" position") you will see that the seat back starts to slide directly down again- hooking it back in place again.
This is perfectly safe, and nothing moves around when the seat bottom is locked in place.
I've attached a pic of what my seatback "hooks" looked like after I cut them. Don't let the plastic look fool you, there is some pretty thick metal inside the plasic coating, so be sure to start the job with the proper tool- a jigsaw with a metal cutting blade is what I used..

Reason: Added picture
Anyone see if there are any places to anchor(screw or staple) some type of covering on the back of the seats? I suppose some velcro might do the trick, but Id rather use some type of thin fiberboard and screw it down. Anyone do this yet?
I'm sure different people will get all sorts of various ideas about how to "finish" it back there.. I am just gonna leave mine just the way that it is. That works fine for me. Consider that fiberboard will be hard and slippery if you ever want to put something on it- unless you put the rough side of the board facing outside.. Then it would just be hard n flat. I like that mine has a soft foamy surface that will be more accomodating to various things if I did ever have to put something on top of those, but I would definitely just put the seat bottoms up and use the floor in that situation.

I did this mod a few months back but never got around to taking pics and posting. Its a great little mod that gives you access to more space. Plenty of room for amps or tools back there.
Thanks for taking the time to get pictures and for a nice write up. This is gonna help out alot of people.
edit: Forgot to ask you, did you have any problems with the angle you cut? I cut mine the opposite angle so they glide into the hooks easier.
++++++++++++
So how much did you cut to do the same?

Man, it was back in Nov. or Dec. that I did this so I cant remember for sure, but if I had to guess I'd say that I cut about an inch and a 1/4 off the hook. Just be sure to follow the same angle as the factory cut so it slides off the bracket nice and clean. You'll see a small dot on the hook when you take the the back seat out......I cut just above that small dot.
Hey when you do the mod let me know i want to check yours out to see if i can gain some space.
Yeah buddy, I'll let you know...it'll be next month though.

I will be doing this Saturday so that when I get my stereo system, the mod is complete and I wont have to worry about it while wiring my truck up. I will post pics of the mod when I am finished
