This is a discussion thread titled "Double Cab folding seats Mod", within the Tundra forum, part of the Truck Forums category.
I came up with this idea because I needed to mount my amps without losing my under-seat storage. This is really a simple mod that can be done in less than an hour if you have all the tools ready to go.
You will need a 14mm wrench. Socket preferred.
Jig saw with metal cutting blade. Hack saw works too.
Star Bit (6 pointed driver)
That's it!
1.
Remove your rear seats. There are 6 14mm bolts holding the seats bolted down. One the floor and one against the back wall for each seat leg/support. Fold the seats up when you do this. When all the bolts are removed, pull up on the entire seat panel to unhook the brackets from the seat backs.
2.
Remove the seat back hooks using the star bit. There are 4.
3.
Cut off 2.5cm (inside measure) from each hook. Cut it at an angle or it will get stuck often as I found out initially. Also, if you reverse the angle compared to my cut, the seat back will have too much play so don't say I didn't warn you.
4.
After all the brackets are cut to the same size, reinstall your brackets to the seats and bolt your seats back down.
5.
Revel in your genious!=D
Here are a few pics of my finished install.
This is the normal position, works like normal.
This is normal also.
Now to do this, lift the seat bottom upward while pulling the seat back forward. When it is approximately 45*, the back will unhook and flip forward. Now you have seat back storage.
* Some observation. There is about 2.5inches of space when everthing is folded up. If the seat is down, there is like 4 inches. Plenty of space for 3" high amps. Also, your seat bottom storage box doesn't go all the way back so you will be regaining that lost space back.
This is a simple mod that anyone can do while you are waiting for wifey to make dinner! =)
cool mod. you wrote that put your amp behind the seat. any pics of that? how did you mount your amp to the rear wall? i have been wanting to do that but was waiting to get ideas. any input would be greatly appreciated.

I did this mod a few months back but never got around to taking pics and posting. Its a great little mod that gives you access to more space. Plenty of room for amps or tools back there.
Thanks for taking the time to get pictures and for a nice write up. This is gonna help out alot of people.
edit: Forgot to ask you, did you have any problems with the angle you cut? I cut mine the opposite angle so they glide into the hooks easier.
Makes you wonder why Toyota didn't do this from the factory. The 05 Frontier I had before my Tundra had the dual-action rear seats exactly like you modded yours. It was one of the reasons I chose the 05 Frontier over the Tacoma.

Rear Susp: ProComp ES3000 #326510 (2.25" taller than stock), 1.25" blocks plus PRG mini-pack (http://www.tundrasolutions.com/forum...and-new-truck/) gives 2.25" total lift, parking brake cable bracket spacers, wheel well height 43."
Front diff and rear ds drop; trailer hitch electrical harness tucked up above bumper.
After 20K miles swapped 305/65/18 BFG AT for 285/75/18 Toyo AT, still on stock 18x8x60 offset TRD wheels, about 1/8" clearance to sway bar. Like the extra height but miss the width. Next time either 305/70/18 or 35x12.50/18.
Added 5th 285/75/18 Toyo AT as spare. Foam pad above spare to help with bed bounce.
Bed Bounce: Stiffer E-tires are worse than stock P-metric; biggest improvement from PRG mini-pack, slight improvement from shocks and foam pad above spare. Still a stiff ride but tolerable now.
Best things about this truck: 5.7 and transmission, interior size and comfort, very quiet at high speed.
Worst things about this truck: bed bounce, no VSC in 4wd, mileage sucks above 70.
Forgot to ask you, did you have any problems with the angle you cut? I cut mine the opposite angle so they glide into the hooks easier.
I was thinking about cutting at the opposite angle also, but I think it would leave a larger opening on the hook that might rattle back and forth.
I too had been thinking about this mod for a while and I finally got around to tackling it this week. The first time it came to me was when I removed the interior of the truck to wrap it in sound deadener.
Hopefully I will have the amps installed this weekend, although things always come up and take longer than you anticipate.

I know its too late because you've already made your cuts, but I dont have any rattles by following the same angle from the factory. Mine open and close very smoothly with very little effort, but looks like we both cut about the same amount off.

Put up some pics of those amps if you get time.
Cool. I figure your angle was better as I can imagine the angle would have been better.
*** note for people who will be performing this mod, cut angle opposite of my photo***
I will post again when my amps are installed. Hopefully this weekend (keeping fingers crossed).
Thanks to NISBO I did the rear folding seat mod on my tundra, comes in very handy now for storing extra stuff behind the seats. Only took about 1hr to do, very simple, thanks. rear seat mod 1-1.jpgrear seat mod 2-1.jpg
