TundraGeneral discussion forum for the 2007 and later Toyota Tundra.
This is a discussion thread titled "Custom Oil Relocation Kit for 5.7", within the Tundra forum, part of the Truck Forums category.
There seems to be a real demand for some improvement for type of and location of the Oil Filter arrangement on the 5.7 engine so smart guys, engineers, machinists and entrepreneurs LISTEN UP!
I want a quality remote Oil Filter setup that mounts professionally under the hood in the Engine compartment. It will use stainless steel mesh bayonet reinforced hoses and a quality adapter on the engine end. It will use a large capacity, (at least one), spin on Canister type Filter and I don't care what the unit it costs, I will buy it.
I understand that there will probably be some minor drop in engine oil pressure but that shouldn't be critical.
If the unit were placed in the air flow, it would also act as another oil cooler and give an increase in oil capacity, both of which are good things.
I think Amsoil has some remote filter rigs and I am going to talk to them about this for the big Tundra.
There is such an arrangement made for the Mazda Miata so why not one for us?
If no one "steps up" I will probably do this myself on a custom basis and if the cost is semi reasonable perhaps sell it to others.
Personally, other than the skid plate, I don't find the stock filter change to be much of a challenge, I can live with it. There's much worse out there. All the Amsoil's, etc, are bypass filters, not full flow. Unless the filter head is removable from the block, leaving an inlet and outlet passage on the block that can be tapped and threaded to accept AeroQuip type hose fittings there's no way to plumb in in order to provide a remote mounted full flow filter.
Changing the oil on a 5.7 Tundra is not difficult.........it's just different. There is a very good step by step instructional article with pictures on this site. Follow this and almost anyone can change their oil easily and quickly.
Changing the oil on the Tundra is a pain in the a$$. It is NOT impossible but it is certainly different. Im not crazy about the drop in filter and would prefer the spin on. Id probably buy an aftermarket remote filter assembly as well. Until then, Ill contend with this mess.

This type of filter is the wave of the future for all engines. It seems it is more eco friendly or some crap like that.
Either way...it isn't that hard...I just wish it was on top of the engine like most others.

Ah so, I didn't know they made one that has an adapter that goes right on the factory filter housing. But without the screw-on threaded pipe is what creates the problem with the Tundra housing.
The remote filter takes me literally 2 minutes to take off and put back on after the housing is drained......and that is WITH the slipping Wally World fluted POS wrench.(actually the 1st change was done with a strap wrench) it's not that big of a deal.
I honestly don't see the problem or the "mess" some talk about.
