This is a discussion thread titled "1st Oil Change/+5" on Dipstick?", within the Tundra forum, part of the Truck Forums category.
Hi everyone, just got back from first trip in 08 5.7L Tundra. I have put 2k miles on it and went to do 1st oil change today. I checked the dipstick and it read about 5 inches above max?? The measurement was taken with a cold engine. I looked in the manual and it says nothing about when to measure just what max and min are. Do they usually ship them out with this much oil? I am no mechanic but that much oil could be harmful to the gaskets I believe. Should I inform the dealer where I purchased this? Any insight into this would be greatly appreciated!
Thanks
Speaking from experience...I would suggest that you compare your dipstick with one from another truck to make sure it is the correct one for your engine. Also check to see if the dipstick tube is the correct length.
I bought a new motorhome a few years ago and it had the wrong transmission dipstick installed and before they discovered what the problem was the trans was destroyed in the first 2000 miles.
I seriously doubt that your engine would have lasted 2k miles with it over-filled with that much oil. Keep us posted!

did you wipe off the stick and check the second timeor just pull the stick and check.
He might not have wiped it off and then put it back in there and then check it good looking out. And all of you call your selfes toyota owners and be so quick to go to the dealer. Before look at do the oil splash up on the dip stick the last time you drove it you said the engine was cold so i assume you do not wipe it.

JBK23, I am having a tough time understanding your post. Before criticizing other people you may want to proof read your paragraph to ensure it makes sense.
Well I am definitely an idiot. After I went out and wiped it off, it did read only an inch above max. Sorry for being such a dumbass. I am finding it very hard to believe I checked it and panicked and wrote on this site. The only thing I can attribute my stupidty to is, I fly for a living and check oil everyday. We use BP2380 which will completely run down the dipstick and be dry less than 2 hrs after running. Poor excuse but it's all I got

Did the same thing. Checked it cold after dealer oil change and was several inches over full. Panicked for a second then wiped, re-inserted and it was right on the full mark. Don't feel like an idiot.
