TundraGeneral discussion forum for the 2007 and later Toyota Tundra.
This is a discussion thread titled "Can tranny temp be read on OBDII bus?", within the Tundra forum, part of the Truck Forums category.
Does anyone know if you can read any of the Tundra's transmission temperatures through the OBD-II computer interface?
I've been thinking about getting a ScanGauge II and can't find anything on their pages that says if or not you can view tranny temperature on a 2007 Tundra with the six-speed tranny...
Hey guys, thanks for the read and responses. I do have the towing package and the transmission temperature gauge - but was hoping the actual temp would be on the OBD-II bus so I could correlate the gauge indication with an actual temperature. Or, better said - the gauge is nice, but is half-way 100 deg F or 200 deg F? I don't know and I would like to know...
Interestingly, the tranny ATF level check procedure seems to show that it is available. As part of the procedure, it says to use the Intelligent Tester tool and look under the DIAGNOSIS / ENHANCED OBD II / DATA LIST / A/T OIL TEMP 2 and check to see if it is between 115 to 133 def F before checking the level.
Perhaps I will contact ScanGauge and see what they've got to say...

Never argue with an idiot. They will bring you down to their level and beat you with experience!

Hi Ben,
To answer your question directly, yes the tranny temp is available via the OBDII/CAN system port under the steering column.
That said, you will need to get the ScanGuage People to recognise the HEX code for the tranny temp. The new ScanGuage units can do this, but they have to give you the proper code to input into there unit to enable it to read the code for tranny temp.
The data is available via the port, and I beleive the SG can read it.
Will they do the work required to read it and give you the needed code to enter is another question.
I emailed Linear Logic (makers of the ScanGauge II)... here's what they have to say about it:
Hi,
I'd like to confirm that you currently do NOT have a code for transmission temperature monitoring for a 2005 Toyota Sequoia. I didn't see anything that would qualify, but since new codes are always becoming available I thought I'd check.
Thank you.
You are correct. For now we still do not have Toyota specific commands. I know we keep saying we are working on it and we don't like leading people on but unfortunately we don't know when we might fix the issue we are having with Japanese vehicles.
