TundraGeneral discussion forum for the 2007 and later Toyota Tundra.
This is a discussion thread titled "Poll for those with the dreaded ticking motor", within the Tundra forum, part of the Truck Forums category.
Here we go again...the cold start ticking is caused by the modified exhaust valve timing to help the engine warm up.
Read, understand, learn...
The first time you posted these I thought with a good explanation that these threads might go away....I guess I should have known better. Oh well, it isn't the first and I'm sure it won't be the last.

If you want to hear a ticking sewing machine then buy a subaru A friend of mine just bought a new forester and it sounds like it's ready to sew a tent together when you start it up. The 5.7 in comparison is super quiet.
hey man i am a subaru tech and this thing reminds me alot of the subaru 3.6
toyota bought out part of subaru for technology and they swap engineer between the companys
The noise should change (quiet down) once the engine is warm and the valve timing is adjusted by the Dual VVT-i control, may only be a slight change in sound to some ears.
The engine has 4 timing chains, they are going to tick a little.
The chains rotate 4 cam shafts moving 32 valves, they are going to tick a little.
Timing belt motors are much quieter than chain motors and most of use have gotten used to the belt motors.
Hey dude my ears are fine and mine ticks at all temps.

Yup, I beleive you...you did read everything I posted, right?
Have you gotten out a stethescope and confirmed where the ticking is coming from?
I have.
But hey, If you think something is wrong with your truck, take it to the dealer...after all, I am just some dude on an internet site, right?

Actually mine has been checked with a scope and I have been told that a bearing in the idle pulley is going bad it goes in the shop monday at 7:15A.M. so they can take apart the front end to get to it. You are some dude on a good internet site and I have read alot of your posts and I have learned alot from them but I can't understand a truck with 4700 miles having to go to the shop to have the idle pulley yanked off and replaced.

That sucks, and I hope they get you fixed up straight away and I also hope that will be the last of your truck's problems.
Your case will be the 1st I've heard about a bad idle pulley bearing.
I am sure it's just a fluke, you know, that one in one million that goes bad before it's time.
Your truck found it and I understand your frustration.
Keep us posted on the outcome.
You'll be back on the road soon...
