I was a certified master technician for about 30 years before changing to the type of job I have now. I've heard many types of engine noise, from lifters, to piston slap, to rods knocking.

My '98 Z71 used to keep my wife worried when we would leave early on a cold morning. Now that I have the Tundra with the 5.7, she asked me one morning, "Isn't this thing sounding a lot like your old truck?"
I replied, "There are 381 anxious horses under that short hood. If they didn't make some noise, I'd be worried."

No one believes me but www.pistonslap.com My Tundra sounds just like my 06 Silverado. Had the high output 5.3. Aluminum block just like my Tundra. Dont tell me its HP and 32 valves ect ect.... My wifes 32valve Northstar dont sound like my Tundra. It's as quiet as a mouse pissing on a cotton ball. My 1970 Olds 442 with 420RWHP dont "tick" like it either. I dont care though I do believe its just the normal sound of these kind of motors and we just have to live with it.

i owned a 99 tacoma, 2003 tundra ac, and now an 08 tundra dc. all three made the ticking noise. never had engine problems. its kind of comforting to hear the noise. might be the rice bouncing around in there. haha
