This is a discussion thread titled "Poll for those with the dreaded ticking motor", within the Tundra forum, part of the Truck Forums category.
Just wondering how many miles you have on yours with the ticking/sewing machine/diesel sounds our engines make?. Also did your ticking turn into a more serious problem?
Mine was sound free for the first 100 miles and its gotten progressively worse as the miles add up (900 now). Kindof sounds like "really" loud injectors or its in the heads. Did it get any better over time? Oil change help?
I know that this subject has been covered before, but wanted to get some mileage date from those with it.
Thanks!

mine did it when it was cold over night. Now that it has warmed up it doesn't make a sound. It had factory oil in it to begin with and the sound was there when the temp outside was in the high 30's. Then I changed the oil to 0w20 and the same was true for the cold weather. same noise. Now the overnight temps are in the 50's and the nooise is gone.

Just like most of what I have heard, mine makes some noise when it is cold in the morning but once it warms up it quiets down. I am using 0W-20 synthetic.
Got 16k on mine, use 0w-20 syn. Mine has made the diesel sound from the beginning (the colder it is the more noticeable it is), but I love it! And I have yet to have any of the problems that others have talked about on this site. I think I am in the majority, but the squeaky wheel....

Same situation as me. I actually really like the sound. There's nothing wrong with the truck, and it reminds me of a diesel. I have 14,500 miles and this truck has been incredible to me

54,732 mi and the engine sounds the same today as it did when I bought it.

I hate 65(60)MPH!
And in my spare time... Rock On!!!
I should have added that I have close to 23,000 miles since August 07 and other than having a flaky torque converter everything has been perfect and has never skipped a beat!
Nice find. That's the first time I've ever seen those.
However, what bout those of us that have it all the time? Mine is always there at temps 55* or below... I dunno why.

You spend too much time in off topic
The noise should change (quiet down) once the engine is warm and the valve timing is adjusted by the Dual VVT-i control, may only be a slight change in sound to some ears.
The engine has 4 timing chains, they are going to tick a little.
The chains rotate 4 cam shafts moving 32 valves, they are going to tick a little.
Timing belt motors are much quieter than chain motors and most of use have gotten used to the belt motors.

If you want to hear a ticking sewing machine then buy a subaru A friend of mine just bought a new forester and it sounds like it's ready to sew a tent together when you start it up. The 5.7 in comparison is super quiet.
