It seems like the flip-down monitor would get to be a pain - having the extra process of flipping it down when you are backing. For those who have had this option for awhile, do you find the flip-down annoying and wish you had the fixed mount?
I would have to agree. But I think the screen on the drop down is a little bigger. The fixed one is kind of small.
Best bet if you dont have one and your stereo system is need of an upgrade anyhow, just get an indash DVD with a nice 7" screen, buy a rear cam for about $100-150 and veiw your cam right through the head unit screen, get the best of both worlds.

Re: OEM Backup Camera Install With Auto Anytime Camera
I installed the flip down one in both my Tundra's. I looked at the old fixed style version and didn't like the viewing angle. The quality of display in the flip down version appeared (may have been the light) to be much sharper. The display also appeared slightly bigger - but I didn't actually see them side by side, so this may have been an illusion.
I don't find flipping it down a pain. Of course you could always leave it down all the time if you wanted to. I like the idea it folds away - only to be brought out when needed.
If I am honest I also like the idea that it is the latest version, just for that sake alone

are they prewired if anyone knows
Make sure you have the prewired plugs at the rear of the truck, find yourself something to lie on and get under the rear of the truck on the passenger side. Look up next to the spare wheel and you should see this loom and plug.
If you don't it can be done as a retro the wiring is easy I would suggest using the flip down monitor with my anytime modification (See Post #3) then you don't have to find reverse wires etc as you have to flip down the monitor to see it hence turning it on.
If you need more help just ask
Pete

Re: OEM Backup Camera Install With Auto Anytime Camera
Can this mod be done without the flip down monitor and using say an Alpine IVA-W200... It has a wiring harness for a backup camera with a signal wire that goes to reverse circuit in order to switch it during reversing. Any power issues with this or can I simply substitute installing the screen for wiring up the headunit?
Josh

If your using the Toyota camera you will need to install a voltage regulator to drop the camera voltage down to around 6 to 7 volts that is normally supplied by the monitor but other than that you have the basic outputs from the camera that you would have from any other.
You will need to search some of the other posts for installing HU's to find regulator and reverse wires info if you need it.
You could also install an anytime switch

Josh,
Yes. Here's an _outstanding_ writeup describing the installation of an incredible system including the back up camera.
Re: OEM Backup Camera Install With Auto Anytime Camera
I installed a Kenwood DNX5120 and used the factory camera and wired it to the kenwood. Picture is much bigger. I wired it so it would come on anytime or when shifted into reverse. Install is pretty simple.
Do a search for Kenwood 5120 on here and you can see the rest but here is the screen shot with the Kenwood...
Re: OEM Backup Camera Install With Auto Anytime Camera
Just want to thankyou Pedro, for awesome directions and Pics. I couldn't have installed my camera/monitor kit without them. One question though, the one thing that I have that was left over was a small foam strip about 3-4 inches long with 3m sticker behind. Where does this go, somewhere around the monitor is my guess. Does it go behind it? Anyone know..
Thanks again.
Re: OEM Backup Camera Install With Auto Anytime Camera
Good Morning Pedro, Great DIY Article. Thanks for taking the time to document it and share it with us.
Question for you.
I noticed your article has a Pre- title of “DIY Contest Article….” Yet it was posted on 4/22/2008.
Can you tell me how you included this “Pre Title” for the contest? Was this a previous Contest you submitted this article for, or the current DIY Contest?
I have several DIY articles I have already posted that I would like considered for the Contest if this is allowed.
Re: OEM Backup Camera Install With Auto Anytime Camera

Re: DIY: OEM Backup Camera Install With Auto Anytime Camera
Installed my rear view camera. Thanks to your great write up, it went smoothly. Didn't do the anytime mod yet, I will try it stock for a while. Thanks.
Re: DIY: OEM Backup Camera Install With Auto Anytime Camera
Like allot of other people after getting my new 08 tundra I wanted to install accessories. The camera was easy to install. Installed a factory flip down one but now I really don't know what I was expecting. I do like gadgets but I think it was the biggest waste of money I could have spend. Just the old Porkers opinion.

Anyway to bring those pics on the first page back to life?
