This is a discussion thread titled "Having my first problem: TQ converter shudder?", within the Tundra forum, part of the Truck Forums category.
Well, I've only had the truck a week, and it's at the dealer getting checked out. I figured that it may be converter shudder, but you guys let me know if I'm off base here.
From 30-35MPH at 1000-1500RPMs, sometimes the truck will start vibrating a little. It feels similar to going over the ridges on the sides on the freeway to keep you in the lanes. It does it almost every time that the truck is being driven at that speed and drops to that RPM level at that speed. At first, I thought that it may just be a bog, but it doesn't feel like that now that I've started paying attention. Thanks for any help!

Re: Having my first problem: TQ converter shudder?
There is an open campaign for the torque converters on this truck. The dealers are aware. If it's the problem they will know about it and replace the unit.
Re: Having my first problem: TQ converter shudder?
It's there right now, I'm just waiting on a diagnosis. I'm sad to hear that there is a problem with them since that's what I thought that it was. In a way, I guess that's a good thing since it will be fixed without a problem.
The service guy DID tell me that he had never heard of that problem with the 07+ Tundras. Hopefully, they won't give me a big hassle about it.

Re: Having my first problem: TQ converter shudder?
Sounds like they're playing "stupid." A dealership in town used to do that lol. Just got off the phone with them actually and they know about all that stuff now but back about 6 months ago, they were clueless.
I hope your truck gets fixed. He was telling me about how they just fixed one like that. Guy took it on a roadtrip and all it did was shudder the whole way. They fixed it and the problem went away like that.

Re: Having my first problem: TQ converter shudder?
Ya, its called the dreaded "rumble strip." Search using that term and you will find plenty of info. I had the issue when I first got the vehicle but I read where a couple of guys said it went away after a few thousand miles. I did not do anything about it, and I am now at 5000 miles....I don't remember the last time i had the rumble. It occurred less and less frequently and now I believe it has simply gone away....
Re: Having my first problem: TQ converter shudder?
Thanks very much for all the info! I'll print that TSB out to take with me to the dealership, mxsjw, I appreciate you taking the time to post that link.

Re: Having my first problem: TQ converter shudder?
Mine will "rumble" right after it shifts from 1st to 2nd and from 2nd to third. It only does it if I take off nice and easy. It's a VERY slight rumble also. I have 13,000 now, I'll mention it to them when I take it in for it's 15,000 maintenance.

Re: Having my first problem: TQ converter shudder?
I picked up the truck yesterday. The service adviser said that it was bogging because it was shifting into OD at too low of a speed, which essentially IS converter shudder. I thought that a bog may be the case at those RPMs. He assured me that my truck had the updated converter already and that probably every truck on the lot would do the same thing in that case. I asked him if there was a way to tune the ECU to make 4th gear hold a little longer so that this wouldn't happen, but he said that there was nothing like that available right now. Does all of this sound correct to everyone?

I have the sport appearance package, but I still have the towing package. That was one of the reasons that I bought this particular truck, because it had both. There's no tow/haul button though. They probably just added the towing hardware back into the truck with the tow package, but left the tow/haul button off. I hope that doesn't mean that I also don't have the bigger radiator, oil cooler, etc. I hope I didn't pay all that money for the tow package and just get a receiver stuck under the bumper!!!
