.............SLOW DOWN! Left this Friday past to visit my 81 year old mother for the weekend. Set the cruise control at 65 mph for the entire trip. First stop, 218 miles & 9.4 gals = 23.19 mpg (flat ground and decreasing elavation first half of trip). Second stop and reached destination, 237 miles & 10.8 gals = 21.94 mpg (Texas hill country). Return home today, Sunday and third stop, 209 miles & 9.8 gals = 21.33 mpg (still in hill country and increasing elavation). Fourth stop and reached destination, 219 miles & 9.5 gals = 23.05 mpg (back to flat ground and increasing elavation). 883 miles and 39.5 gals round trip, cruise set at 65 = 22.35 mpg average. These numbers have made a believer out of me.......it's worth slowing down.
Yes, I was the slowest one on the highway. In each leg of my trip I increased my speed to the posted speed limit for 5 miles and set the cruise control, just to see if others were obeying the speed limit. Yep, I was still the slowest one on the highway, being passed left and right with the cruise set at the posted speed limit. Increased travel time is just not that much more but I do believe the fuel savings is worth it. Anyhow, just thought I would post my observations/results.

Kindda hard to do 65 mph when right outside Las Vegas the speed limit is 75mph
...............you must be staying in a roach motel then.

Parts of my trip had 80 mph posted speed limit. When I accelerated to 80 and set the cruise, I was still the slowest. Talk about sh?t for brains, I counted 3 vehicles pulled over by the DPS...........80 just isn't fast enough I guess.
My point is, the Tundra is capable of 21-23 mpg at 65 mph but even at $3.65/gal no one seems to care.

Lol I'm in college so it'd be the first place that allows dogs.
Either way, much easier just to drive 80 and get it done with in one day than 65 and in two days.

Must be the new math they teach in college these days............13.5 hours doing 80 = 1 day. 15 hours doing 65 = 2 days. Who's buying the gas, you, or someone else. LOL

I 100% agree i had my cruise set at 68 on the way back from Ft Worth a month or so ago and got 20-21 (I'd have to go get my reciepts to be exact). It really can be done you just have to work at it

Can you imagine the fuel/money people could save if they just slowed down to the posted speed limit and went inside to get that burger instead of idling for 10 min in the drive thru line? The price of convenience is now $3.65/gal and rising.

Sounds like you were a hazard on the road by not keeping up with traffic. If you were being passed on the right, you were blocking traffic! Driving at the speed limit is no excuse. No wonder road rage is a problem! "Keep to the right except to pass" is a law here which needs to be enforced. Sorry, but this is a pet peeve of mine.
Having driven in 20 countries, US gas has been and is cheap. Right now,the cheapest gas in Europe is $6.12 in Bulgaria and the most expensive in the Netherlands at $9.39. We live in a global economy. Remember that the next time you fill up.

Have to agree about being passed on the right side. . . This should net you a ticket unless it's an asshat who's in a huge hurry and can't wait for you to get back into the right lane after you've passed an even slower truck or trailer-hauler (I've been there).
so the funny thing is, my commute, I have no trouble driving 60-65 MPH ( I'm not in THAT MUCH of a hurry to get to work LOL) but when I' travelling, long trips, I'm at 75 minimum and if I don't have a trailer and conditions / limits allow I'm at 80 or 85 MPH. Since most of my driving is my commute (45 miles each way) I'm still saving money most of the time.
There is a BIG difference between 16 hours at 65 MPH and 12 hours at 85! I even think I just get more tired BECAUSE I'm driving so slow, I just get kind of hypnotized by the slowness of it all, which doesn't seem to be as much of a problem at the faster speed.
Anyway that's my experience. . ." " " "

Reason: lost the quote. . . lol
Well duh!......the phrase, 'being passed both left and right' is an expression or an old saying......and not to be taken literally. I knew there would be some "screw the law (legal speed limit), I'm above it", type responses. Ain't this a great place, they let anybody play.

Good point...I just put my first drop of $4.00 gas in my bike...$5.00 will be here soon enough...Is everyone charging the fuel???

Well sometimes with those OTHER idiots out there, they do literally pass you left and right, even when you ARE driving properly. They'll pass you on the friggin' off-ramp and cut you off. . . sometimes I'd like to install dual rocket launchers . . . but no insult intended

What I notice alot of drivers doing around here is on a 2 lane hwgh they will get in the left lane so they dont have to deal with merging traffic, then go 60mph with EVERYONE backing up behind them, and will not move for anyone no matter what until there exit comes up then they speed up cut someone off and then slam on there brakes because they are taking that exit and god forbid you give them a honk to let them know they are driving like crap they just slow down even more and give you the finger drives me nuts.
