...dreaded ticking on cold startups. I was sitting here thinking about this morning as to whether I heard the usual ticking. I don't believe I heard it. Has anyone else noticed?
Some things have the tendency to become over-exaggerated the more people talk about it. If the noise was a problem, you'd think there would be some mentioning of engine failures, which there really isn't. Plenty of older 4.7s were noisy as well when cold, but to my knowledge there were just a handfull of unrelated documented problems with this engine compared to the masses of them still on the road with many miles on them. I'm personally getting kind of tired hearing people complain about something that really isn't a problem.

CAI's have nothing to do with valve train rattle,Ive had Full Roller 406's with 114 LSA bumpsticks that made less noise then these Tundra 5.7's
I hate to sound as though I was complaining because I really wasn't. Just trying to make some conversation about some of the "incentives" of having a CAI. And note that no brand was mentioned.

The noise will not be cured by any intake. The only thing a CAI would do is make the engine bay slightly louder and maybe mask the "ticking". I have an Airaid on mine and I can still hear a slight "dieseling" when the weather is cold over night. The sound is either a noisy valve train which is common with over head cam engines or the pistons slapping slightly because when they get cold they shrink slightly. My old Mazda had a cast iron block with aluminum pistons with aluminum head and overhead valves. When it was cold it sounded sickly but once warm it was fine. I lived in Oregon at the time and it would get into the teens at night sometimes. That truck was with me for 13 years of very hard driving and always had the cold start up noise. Also the Tundras don't have a lot of sound proofing in the engine bay.
