Default Temp sensor:same for display & engine control?

Today I had my truck parked in full sun, on a warm day (upper 70's). I got in for a short trip, and noticed the temperature display read only 69, and after the first 1/2 mile, it dropped to 66. I've always thought the display reads lower than actual temperature outside, but this is the first time it was so obvious.

This had my mind wondering where the dashboard display gets its information, and if it is the same as the sensor used by engine control to determine fuel/air mixture, is my truck running rich? Like many people, I'm a bit disappointed in the MPG for my truck (07 DC 4x4 5.7), and have actually seen mileage drop a bit since new, even with a very soft foot.

Would a OBD scanner give any info about the performance, or would I need to go to a dealer for an evaluation of the temp sensor?

Thanks,

Pete

My Dad still drives my old 1986 Hilux 4x4 most days. He has a new car, but he just loves that old truck.

most of the time there is 2 sensors for engine temp. one for gauge one for ecu, and then one air temp sensor for the thermo in the car. air temp sensor is in front of radiator right behind bumper on drivers side.

Why is everyone disapointed in the gas mileage? Is this the first truck they have driven or what? I have had 2 Chevrolet's and 2 Dodges 350's on the Chevy's and 5.9's in the Dodges and My Tundra is averaging 15mpg in the city and I drive like a Texan....fast and quick. This truck gets OUTSTANDING mpg for a TRUCK!!!! Maybe not a car or Hybrid, but a truck outstanding for a large V8. Old rule of thumb more power less mpg, more mpg less power!

I just laugh and drive my truck... and stop nitpicking about my MPG with my 4.7L engine! Life is too short to be nitpicking about every damn thing.

Sanosuke!
