Tundra Solutions is looking for someone in the central valley who owns a 2007x Supercharged Tundra that we can borrow to take pictures of and use in a story. If you would like to help please send a PM to TundraSoul or send us an email. We will pay you for your gas and time to meet us at our office in Clovis. Thanks.
TundraGeneral discussion forum for the 2007 and later Toyota Tundra.
This is a discussion thread titled "oops smoked the rear end", within the Tundra forum, part of the Truck Forums category.
uh...dont our trucks come with LSD from the factory?
NOPE.
The brakes automatically activate (if LSD is enabled) and provide braking to the spinning wheel. This is not true LSD, where the differential limits the actual amount of different spin one side to the other. (numerous LSD threads provide more information regarding this).

What are you referring too? I have the same brochure. If it had a limited slip it would be totally hidden within the two differential case halves, (that would be the diff case between the pinion gear and the tapered roller brg on the left.) There's no way to tell by the pic if there's L.S. clutch packs or conventional axle and spider gears in the case.
Quote:
Funny you mention that, the picture of the 10.5" diff in the Tundra brochure shows a 4 pinion or possibly limited slip differential.
Four pinion???? Any differential has ONE pinion gear which drives the ring gear,, L.S. or not-----automotive differential terminology 101.
Quote:
One wheel peeling will tear up the spider gears really fast, regardless of how big the ring gear is.
That's for sure, lengthy one wheel spinning and the other one not spinning is not what they're designed for. Under those conditions they're spinning super fast and that with a lack of lubrication---kablooy. Also, it's easy for a mechanic to determine if that's what caused the destruction and if so that type abuse factor doesn't come under the warranty.
Is it me or does anyone notice that in the lower left picture on that page in that brochure, that the driveshaft goes into the rear pumpkin at a slight angle off to the right approaching from the left?
the driveshaft goes into the rear pumpkin at a slight angle off to the right approaching from the left?
Yessir, lots if not most rearends are like that. The ring gear isn't necessarily centered in the housing due to the design of the whole differential assembly, and since the pinion gear is mated to it, it and the driveshaft won't be centered either.
Can't remember the correct terminology regarding which is which, but many bigger truck rear ends have the pinion gear driving the lower half of the ring gear versus the upper half. (Above or below the ring gear center line.) There's a gazillion designs out there, especially the bigger stuff, 2 speeds, Eaton 3 speed tandems (a disaster in engineering), double reduction (that's a housing full of gears), and on and on.
ok, so when im at the track, and im in the water box... peeling out to warm the tires is bad? I make sure to turn off all the traction control, but since im inside the truck, i cant tell if both wheels are spinning or just one. Is this bad regardless?

The term for the off center (above/below) of the ring gear axis centerline is "hypoid". Somewhat similar is "spiral bevel" gears. The pinion and ring gear being off center side to side probably has some technical name but I just call it driveline/driveshaft/or pinion "offset".
since we seem to be having terminology wars, i will keep it simple. the little pin broke and allowed the big pin to move and luckily that didnt break. the cause was excessive one wheel spin. i did a quick u turn a couple of weeks ago from gravel onto pavement i had it spinning pretty good before one wheel caught the pavement. i am pretty sure thats what did it. i am the 3rd in the US to have this problem so far. the regional service rep out here was my Toyota t-ten instructor. so he is gonna see to it that its waranteed. he said that totota covered the others too, but its a one time deal.
as time pass's we will all come to understand the truth about the alleged quality of these trucks.
Resell value is right at par with the many cheesy parts and the failures and the . . . . . .(steady decline)
I agree. I think this vehicle falls somewhere between a real truck and a ridgeline. It works for me because I don't push mine hard at all.
Only strange issue for me currently (had issues in the past) is when cold it doesn't want to shift into 6th gear. It'll sit at 2k for a while in fifth gear before shift down to 6th gear.
